The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person. Commitment: Dedicated to the mission at all times Accountability: Responsible to each other and the community Resilience: Adapt in the face of adversity Excellence: Achieve and maintain the highest quality Service: Innovate to meet evolving needs The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) seeks an experienced, highly organized, and strategically minded Director of Forensic Pathology Support Services to oversee the operational units that directly support the City’s forensic pathology mission. The Director will manage the Forensic Autopsy Services Unit (FASU), Forensic Radiography Unit, Forensic Photography Unit, Forensic Pathology Coordinators, and the Medical Examiner Support Unit (MESU). The Director is responsible for ensuring that all technical, operational, and administrative services supporting forensic pathology are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with professional, legal, and accreditation standards. The Director will provide high-level operational oversight; develop and implement policies and procedures; manage multi-disciplinary technical staff; evaluate and improve workflows; and serve as a key liaison to internal and external partners. This position is integral to the effective functioning of OCME’s forensic pathology operations and requires a leader with strong communication skills, expert judgment, and the ability to manage complex, high-volume technical services across multiple sites. Responsibilities include: - Provide leadership and operational management for FASU, Radiography, Photography, Pathology Coordinators, and MESU. - Supervise managerial, technical, and administrative staff; oversee staffing levels, performance expectations, and professional development. - Ensure proactive workflow management and communication in the autopsy suite, including real-time issue resolution and coordination across teams. - Oversee forensic radiography services, including daily triage preparation, case-driven imaging decisions, and implementation of CT technology. - Manage forensic photography operations, ensuring high-quality documentation of autopsies, evidence, pathology examinations, and agency activities. - Oversee administrative case-support functions such as family communications, laboratory follow-up, and coordination between Medical Examiners and support units. - Develop and implement policies, procedures, and quality assurance measures that support forensic pathology operations and accreditation standards. - Manage budgets, procurement, equipment, and resource planning for all pathology-support units. - Conduct operational assessments and implement workflow and safety improvements across units and facilities. - Prepare operational reports, analyses, and briefings for agency leadership and external oversight entities. - Represent unit operational needs to external partners by providing clear, accurate information to support funding, staffing, and programmatic requests. - Maintain advanced proficiency in the use and parameters of the Case Management System and perform routine assessment of operational modules to identify new system needs and recommend enhancements. - Maintains operational knowledge of disaster and continuity of operations plans for areas of responsibility. - Provide 24/7/ availability to respond to urgent matters of the division and agency, including incidents and participation in the agency’s MESORT and disaster response and on-call schedule. - Attending operational meetings as representative for area of responsibility and collaborates with other directors to facilitate and enhance operations across the division. - Develop and Implement measures for quality assurance and control. - Other duties as assigned. **THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY**SPECIAL NOTE: Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, with specialization in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, molecular genetics, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, entomology, anthropology, ecology or a closely related scientific or engineering field.Preferred Skills- Leadership experience in forensic pathology, death investigation, forensic science, laboratory operations, or related technical fields. - Strong understanding of autopsy operations, forensic imaging practices, and death investigation workflows. - Demonstrated ability to manage large multidisciplinary teams and complex operational environments. - Strong analytical, organizational, and policy-development skills. - Experience with budgeting and resource planning oversight. - Knowledge of NAME accreditation standards and other relevant regulations. - Proficiency with MS suite, case management systems, digital imaging tools, and radiographic systems. - Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and sound judgment.Public Service Loan ForgivenessAs a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
