PART TIME Experienced Medical Assistant-INFUSION CENTER-minimum of 5 yrs experience

POSITION SUMMARY

As a Medical Assistant (MA) this position performs a wide variety of duties and responsibilities in a manner that places emphasis on quality of care and customer service. The incumbent must work collaboratively with all Clinical services staff in support of direct patient services, exhibiting flexibility and a “can-do” attitude. Patient services are the key priority in this position requiring the MA to serve as a point of contact with other internal and external departments, all with the goal of fostering an environment which promotes patient comfort and trust. The position must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising the utmost discretion, diplomacy and tact in patient/staff interactions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CAN INCLUDE:

1. Prepares patient appointments by reviewing and updating patient records prior to appointment.
This includes reviewing physician orders, checking for updates of recent lab results and correspondence. Also reviews patient record (EHR) to determine needed services.

2. Maintains Infusion Suite according to protocols: Cleans each infusion chair site appropriately between patients to ensure the patients' comfort and compliance with infection control standards; ensures all necessary infusion center supplies are ordered timely and stocked. Promptly notates when supplies are low and work with infusion staff to ensure timely reordering is completed.

3. Greets patients, then assesses patient vital signs including: weight, height, temp, blood pressure, and basic medical history; accurately documents in medical chart according to generally accepted medical standards. Provides initial medical screening and directs patients to available infusion chair site.

4. Appropriately prepares patient for visit and alerts infusion nurse when patient is ready to be seen. When nurse is unavailable, the MA keeps the patient updated on the status of their appointment and when necessary, assists the patient in re-scheduling or scheduling follow-up. Instructs patients as to general clinic policies, patients’ rights and responsibilities, as needed.

5. Assists nurse during examination of patient, when requested and in accordance with generally accepted medical standards. Practices very strict universal precautions with respect to established safety protocols. Facilitates communication between the provider(s), nurse and patient as needed, including translation as appropriate.

6. Utilizes time in a constructive and efficient manner by assisting in such duties as restocking Chairside trays/shelves/med room and ensures the entire Infusion Suite is clean and orderly.

7. Performs general clerical duties in support of patient services according to the needs of the clinic and as directed by the Practice Manager, Physicians and nursing staff. These could include but are not limited to answering phones, photocopying, faxing, data entry, completing forms, etc. Works with patient scheduling software to assist Patient Registration staff with the orderly and efficient patient flow.

8. Provides administrative back-up support to Supervising RN, MD and Practice Manager as necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the Infusion Suite. Accepts floating assignments to other areas of Clinic (e.g. Infectious Disease), as needed and assigned.

9. Maintains nurses' station, according to protocols. Performs routine quality check of equipment and promptly reports damaged or missing equipment from the Infusion area.

10. For safety and security reasons, the MA is responsible for knowing the whereabouts of a patient any time the patient is in clinical areas. In the event of a patient or clinic emergency, the MA may be called to activate the proper ‘code’, assisting provider(s) and clinical staff with the appropriate emergency response, including calling EMS (9-1-1). In the event of evacuation, the MA will assist in the evacuating of patients receiving treatments or services in the clinic.

11. Performs phlebotomy services for patients whenever requested or necessary, as ordered by Physicians, operation of centrifuge and ensuring that specimen pick up is arranged promptly.

12. Attends meetings, as required.

13. Acts in capacity as interpreter, whenever needed.

14. Performs all duties and service in full compliance with FIDMGI Service Excellence Standards.

16. Performs additional duties, as assigned by RN, MD and/or Practice Manager in providing exceptional patient care and in support of quality assurance and improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 YEARS EXPERIENCE AS  A MEDICAL ASSISTANT

1. Excellent communication skills at a level necessary for taking patients' medical histories, understanding provider and supervisor's instructions, and for accurately documenting patients' medical information. Ability to effectively communicate with patient population and staff while demonstrating a high degree of diplomacy and tact.

2. Exceptional computer and phone skills.

3. Willingness to work all weekends, which could also include holidays; demonstrates flexibility regarding job duties and assignments.

4. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a high-stress and fast-moving environment.

5. Culturally sensitive and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with ethnically diverse populations.

6. Working knowledge of “Universal Precautions,”

7. Demonstrates professionalism at all times. Possess a thorough understanding of the importance of confidentiality and non-disclosure according to the general standards set forth by HIPAA regulations.

8. Bilingual English/Spanish REQUIRED.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. High school Graduate (or GED) required.

2. Current, valid California Certification of Medical Assistant.

3. Current, valid BLS certification.

4. Familiarity with community / service area.

5. Minimum five years previous experience as Medical Assistant, required.
