Education: Masters degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Counseling or Marriage and Family Therapy. Current state of Tennessee LPC or LMFT license required. LPC-MHSP license preferred. Credentialed as a Tennessee Board Approved Supervisor highly desired.


In the Director of Counseling role, you will be responsible for but not limited to the following:


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Bi-weekly individual supervision with in-house (local) counselors (may meet more often if needed).
  • Bi-weekly supervision/consult with Counseling Advisor and other counselors.
  • Schedule and facilitate monthly counselor meetings.
  • Keep the Program Director apprised of any pertinent information regarding in-house counselors and their residents as outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Consult with Senior Director, Programs on a regular basis regarding counseling-related issues and/or concerns, additional training needed for counselors, reporting alleged abuse, and as otherwise outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Ensure all policies and procedures are being followed.
  • Meet with counselors when new policies and procedures are released to ensure understanding and develop implementation plan.
  • Review counseling notes and data reports and make recommendations for corrections when appropriate.
  • Ensure Discharge Summaries are completed by counselors and signed by the Program Director within the required timeframe of a resident exiting the program.
  • Assign new residents to counselors and communicate counselor assignment to Intake Supervisor.
  • Conduct Abuse Prevention Seminar for residents within first two weeks (and staff when applicable).
  • Review all residents files quarterly to ensure files are updated by counselors.
  • Organize and schedule group counseling as outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Ensure information regarding residents is documented in the Shift Change Communication Log for both night and weekend staff.
  • Hold monthly graduation meeting with Counseling department, Transitional Care Liaison, and Program Director to plan graduation projections and discuss residents progress.
  • Participate in Program Operations Conference meetings with other Directors of Counseling, Program Directors, Directors of Home Operations, and Counseling Advisor.
  • Meet with Counseling Advisor a minimum of once per month face-to-face or via phone conversation to discuss progress of counseling team, assess strengths and weaknesses, and assess areas for needed growth.
  • Must be flexible and willing to stay after hours if a special circumstance arises.

State-Required Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Maintain proper licensure in your appropriate field.
  • Hold and maintain board-approved supervisor status when possible and provide licensing supervision for eligible counselors/therapists who are pursuing their license per state requirements. Ensure the counselor meets licensing requirements for Tennessee.
  • Drive the personal and professional growth of the counseling department as it relates to best practices in counseling and ensure all state legal and ethical requirements are met.
  • Ensure continuous awareness of all state legal and ethical requirements as it relates to the field of counseling and recommend changes if/when necessary; work with counseling team to ensure they are informed.
  • Continued training that meets or exceeds all state legal and ethical requirements.
  • Work with Counseling Advisor to remain up to date on all counselor licenses and certifications to ensure all state legal and ethical requirements for counseling providers are consistently being met.
  • Keep Program Director abreast of state requirements that will need to be implemented.

Counseling Responsibilities

  • Counsel with assigned residents weekly.
  • Ability to work with minors and/or pregnant residents and their families.
  • Lead each resident through Choices that Bring Change and complete all associated paperwork. This includes required readings and assignments. Review each assignment once submitted by the resident and document completion as outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Maintain electronic file for each resident including counseling notes, confidentiality agreements, releases of information, media release, commitment forms, and all other required forms outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Complete all required paperwork necessary for resident evaluations to be complete.
  • Schedule and assist with resident evaluations for each assigned resident in coordination with Program Director.
  • Communicate residents progress with guardians/support partners on a regular basis and ensure family sessions are being conducted as determined throughout a residents stay.
  • Follow all policies and procedures regarding proper documentation.
  • Ensure that all forms of communication regarding a resident, including phone calls and/or electronic communication (e.g. emails, text messages, social media messages) are documented and uploaded to the residents electronic file as outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • Help facilitate conflict resolution, when necessary, with other residents and/or staff.
  • Address and confront resident issues when appropriate. This may include using structured interventions and accountability as outlined in the Counseling Manual.
  • When appropriate, support home staff by recommending assignments/interventions that may be the most helpful for a specific resident.
  • Meet with the Medical/Wellness team regularly regarding the residents medication, medical status, and/or mental health concerns.
  • Provide input with medical staff prior to a resident attending their scheduled psychiatric appointments and ensure awareness of the results of the appointment, including medication changes and/or the psychiatrists documentation.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, Team Meetings, Aftercare Meetings, and Wellness-Team Meetings.
  • Consult with Nutrition Manager and/or Fitness Manager as needed, regarding residents who struggle with eating disorders or who begin showing disordered eating behavior.
  • Facilitate group counseling as scheduled and implement additional groups as needed.
  • Assist other counselors with prayer ministry if needed, and document involvement appropriately.
  • Facilitate conference calls with residents established accountability partners, along with the Transitional Care Liaison, prior to a resident leaving the program.
  • Complete discharge summary as outlined in the Counseling Manual when a resident exits the program.
  • Complete all necessary state licensing requirements as outlined in the Counseling Manual, in accordance with state licensing standards.
  • Assist in other ways as approved and as needed.

Schedule: Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 5:00pm, Friday 8:00am - 12:00pm (36 hours per week)

These residential services are offered free-of-charge. The Mercy Multiplied Center for Wellness and Counseling is Mercys free-of-charge Outpatient counseling Program for men and women aged 13 and older. Our Outreach Services train and resource men and women to effectively support and minister to those who are hurting and struggling through workshops, videos, podcasts, discipleship teaching, and other practical resources.
