Position Summary

The Sr. Scientist/Lab Manager will be a detail-orientated yet creative beverage product developer who is capable of overseeing RD lab organization and innovation project development cycles. A passion for better-for-you beverages and a curiosity in natural approaches to improving daily life is a must. This role will ensure compliance with safety standards/brand guardrails, optimize the RD development processes, create innovative products from concept through commercialization, and eventually manage laboratory personnel.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Keep up to date on current and upcoming food/bev trends, nutrition, and novel ingredients.
  • Supervise and mentor laboratory staff, providing training and guidance on experimental techniques, project management, and data analysis.
  • Evaluate new ingredients and finished products to specifications.
  • Develop and lead research projects focused on beverage formulation, including new product development and optimization of existing formulations.
  • Collaborate with marketing, regulatory, and production teams to ensure product alignment with market trends and consumer preferences.
  • Nutritional and Supplement fact panel creation within Genesis program.
  • Consult with production team on process solutions for operations.
  • Communicate with suppliers to source new ingredients.
  • Support and oversee co-manufacturing of new products outside of core competencies.
  • Maintain RD lab inventories and processes.

Job Qualifications

Education: A BS degree in Food Science, Culinary Arts, Beverage Technology, Chemistry, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: 6-10 years of experience in food/beverage industry. Preferred experience in a food/beverage development environment. Strong understanding of beverage ingredients, processing methods, and sensory evaluation techniques. High understanding of commercialization of projects and how to improve efficiencies.

Knowledge: Strong understanding of taste, flavors, and food pairings. An understanding of chemistry, composition, nutrition, and regulations as it relates to food and beverage. Developed lexicon for sensory description and ability to communicate flavor. Knowledge of Organic/conventional global produce, herbs, spices, and naturopathic remedies. Knowledge of R&D systems and tools to include Genesis, sensory applications, and other programs/tools to enhance R&D processes.

Language Skills: Excellent oral, written and presentation communication skills required. Computer literate; competent in excel, word, PowerPoint. Spanish is a plus.

Other Skills: Work collaboratively with RD team and cross-functional partners. Comfortable reaching out via email/phone to suppliers, copackers, and industry contacts as needed. Able to prioritize tasks and manage productivity independently. Flexible and diligent to perform given short deadlines.

Working and Environmental Conditions

Primary workspace is in a temp controlled RD lab with standard benchtop equipment for measuring, mixing, and testing new products. Regularly works within a refrigerated (35-40 degrees) manufacturing facility. Occasionally travel offsite to oversee co-packing operations. Requires occasional work on nights and weekends.

Physical Demands

Standing for extended periods, medium computer use, and the occasional lifting/carrying of up to 50 lbs.

Compensation

$145,000/year
