Responsible for operating Agency revenue service vehicles safely, including 29 to 40 ft buses used in public transportation in the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. Assumes responsibility for the safety of Agency customers and equipment; performs routine vehicle inspections to ensure proper operations. Communicates appropriate information to customers, Supervisors, and others. Answers inquiries from customers and others. Follows Agency transportation guidelines, operating rules, and procedures. Responsible for collecting fares, overseeing safety, resolving problems, providing good customer relations, and maintaining public trust. Arrives on time and works independently with minimal supervision, with performance evaluated by supervisor through monitoring of schedule adherence, driving record, and courteous treatment of the public.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Operates a transit vehicle to pick up, transport, and discharge passengers while adhering to the route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Operates buses from 29 to 40 ft in size.
  • Performs pre-trip inspections for mechanical problems prior to scheduled runs, including external/internal visual inspections and equipment testing.
  • Completes familiarization with system and safety features, geography and roadways, traffic rules, regulations, and fare structures.
  • Refers to time schedules and instructions for service pull-outs, line service, pull-ins, and off-route trips.
  • Provides information on bus services to passengers, including schedules, routes, and fares.
  • Exchanges radio messages involving emergencies and service interruptions to maintain efficient transit operations.
  • Writes reports and completes forms as required, including detailed reports of incidents and mechanical defects.
  • Adheres to safety rules and Standard Operating Procedures to ensure the safety of customers and employees.
  • Operates a passenger bus safely in accordance with local traffic regulations.
  • Maintains schedule adherence over assigned routes.
  • Ensures safe operation under adverse conditions.
  • Works varying hours, including nights and weekends, as required by the Labor Agreement.
  • Collects fares from passengers.
  • Operates a wheelchair lift and assists passengers with disabilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
  • Ability to operate a bus safely on all streets in the service area.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good public relations.
  • Ability to complete the Bus Operator Training Program successfully.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • History of satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to read maps and determine routes.
  • Judgment and common sense in making quick decisions.
  • Professional composure under stress and pressure.
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques and safety guidelines.
  • Social perceptiveness and understanding of others' reactions.
  • Ability to follow and understand directions from supervisors.
  • A high degree of maturity, courtesy, memory, and concentration.
Required Software Knowledge and Skills:

Proficiency in using computer systems and software applications associated with job duties is essential. Basic problem-solving skills are expected.

Safety Responsibility:

Perform all job duties safely to protect oneself and others from harm. Promote safety awareness and report unsafe conditions.

Training and Education:

High School graduate and/or equivalent GED.

Required Experience:
  • Two years public driving experience or five years related work experience.
  • One year of customer service experience.
Licenses or Certificates:

Must have a CDL Class A or B license with air brake and passenger endorsement.

Special Requirements:
  • This position is classified as essential personnel.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical examination.
  • Successful completion of a bus operations training program.
  • Successful passing of a job-related agility assessment.
  • Pass federal government background screening for local military installation access.
Physical Demands:
  • Climb and descend bus steps.
  • Climb up and down stairwells.
  • Walk approximately ¼ mile in all weather.
  • Bend or squat for pre-trip requirements.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Kneel and squat for wheelchair securement.
  • Excellent night vision required.
Unusual Demands:

Work flexible hours on various days, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, and be available on short notice.
