Description:

Position Summary: The Office of District Planning (ODP) is responsible for the development of district- and borough-based plans that optimize the use of school buildings to advance equity and accelerate learning and instruction. These plans include placement of high-quality schools and programs in available space, grade reconfigurations, re-sitings, and zoning changes.
The Planning Coordinator will manage a number of school/community engagement-related activities, including event planning, development of print and electronic informational materials, and strategic community outreach to share information, solicit feedback, and analyze public comments. This position will also develop and maintain organizational systems to manage projects, perform qualitative analysis of public and school/community input, and leverage strategies to increase awareness and effectiveness of the public role in district planning. Key Relationships: Works closely with leadership and other staff in District Planning, Office of Space Planning, Office of Student Enrollment, Office of Family and Community Empowerment, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Office of the General Counsel, Superintendents, as well as other internal vendors and personnel related to or interested in educational services for NYC students, community-based organizations (CBOs), and other internal and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
  • Manage logistical aspects of public hearings and information sessions with the community.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key internal and external school and community stakeholders, such as Community Education Councils, Division of Family and Community Empowerment, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, school community members, and CBOs.
  • Ensure that ODP’s publications, events, and processes are accessible to schools, community groups, and the public, while taking language and other possible communication challenges into account.
  • Develop community engagement materials, including proposal summaries, briefing documents and analyses of public comment.
  • Maintain database of school proposals and track the status of activities to ensure compliance with school governance law.
  • Collect and analyze public comments, and respond to inquiries regarding specific proposals and general District Planning activities.
  • Serve as a representative for the Office of District Planning in public hearings and other external events, or outreach to CBOs.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred
  • Experience in community organizing, event planning or campaigning.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external constituents.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of New York City public school system, the public sector and/or interest in public education. Superior organization skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and proactively resolve issues.
  • Sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills, systems and strategic thinking skills.
  • Strong quantitative data analysis skills.
  • Ability to conceptualize, implement and assess new processes and systems.
  • Ability to organize facts and present information and data in a clear, concise, and logical manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Salary: $60,733 - $76,828
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
