Position Title: Preparator (Fabricator and Wood Finisher)
Department: Exhibit Design and Installation
Reports to: Vice President of Exhibit Design and Installation
FLSA Classification: Full-Time, Hourly

SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Exhibit Design and Installation and the Chief Preparator, this position assists with fabrication, mounting and general handling of permanent and special exhibits. At times, Preparator will be expected to safely handle and work around artifacts.

Preparator will also assist in the maintenance of museum’s fabrication shop and keep specified equipment in pristine and safe condition. Preparator must be an experienced carpenter. The preparator must be able to safely operate power tools and dust collection systems, as well as assist with installing modular walls, casework and lighting. Preparator must have an eye for detail and know how to complete professional finish work, be organized and able to produce high volumes of work with minimal supervision, move heavy objects, work on ladders and operate scizzor lifts. Days and hours may vary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborates in the planning and installation of exhibits including fabricating temporary and permanent walls, display casing, pedestals shelving, lighting, signage, labels and other exhibition components
  • Lifts, carries and moves heavy objects such as crates, artwork, exhibition furniture and props
  • Performs moderately complex carpentry including leveling, joining, finishing and and painting
  • Assists with art and artifact handling including wrapping, crating, storing and shipping, as well as the construction of crates and storage fixtures
  • Drives Museum vehicle in support of exhibition and collection programs
  • Assist in the installation, maintenance and operation of gallery and showcase lighting
  • Understands and maintains awareness of any precarious situations around artifacts
  • Routinely inspects facility and galleries and corrects deficiencies; maintains appearance of galleries, including cleaning and dusting showcases, frames and pedestals
  • Operates appropriate hand power tools and performs carpentry work as instructed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Conduct all responsibilities in a safe manner according to regulations (OSHA, IIPP, etc.)

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma; plus three to five years of experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Independent good judgment and decision-making are required in this position.

  • License to operate a variety of vehicles and forklifts
  • Proven skills in the use of power tools, wood and metal shop machinery, and lifting apparatuses
  • Knowledge of best practices for art handling and movement, installation and art object packing and crating
  • Proven skills in woodworking, cabinetry, metalworking, plastics, painting/decorative finishes, and general construction
  • Experience fabric-wrapping panels and boxes
  • Ability to read floor plans and Autocad to communicate through sketches
