Description of Work Unit

The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) fosters an inclusive campus community that supports students and staff holistically in the development of their unique potential. We collaborate across the University to inspire and empower students to be active learners inside and outside the classroom, successful graduates, and engaged global citizens. We support student success through an array of services and resources including housing, dining, student orientation, recreation, student government, student organizations, and legal, career, transition, health, well-being, and crisis services. In addition to student services, we also connect with parents and families, host conferences and events, manage the Mountain Campus, provide professional development opportunities for staff, and partner with a number of businesses in the student center. The Division employs 800 career staff, 2,000 student and hourly staff, and manages a budget of over $180 million.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is the executive management unit for the Division of Student Affairs.

As part of the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness provides vision and leadership for activities related to institutional research and reporting, academic program review/planning, and accreditation.

Position Summary

This is a 9-month temporary non-student hourly administrative professional position co-reporting to the Director of Assessment in the Division of Student Affairs and the Senior Research Analyst in Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness (IR) at Colorado State University. This position is based in Fort Collins, with the potential for flexible work arrangements, including remote work. The position has responsibility for a range of duties within the Office with a primary focus on 1) designing, developing, documenting, and configuring custom web-based reports and visualizations, 2) writing/editing complex SQL programming coding for report extracts, 3) managing the validation and documentation for co-curricular data entered through systems outside of the SIS; all in service of students’ success at CSU. The position is expected to use independent judgement to make sound decisions with limited supervision.

This position has limited supervision with only periodic review of the coding and reports. It requires the use of professional discretion to apply programming standards and rules. In addition, it may make recommendations regarding project prioritization, tools, and operational definitions. Its impact is largely isolated to the department level but may also impact the University more broadly. The reports written and/or data extracted through SQL programming against the Oracle database will be provided to executive leadership, college deans, other campus constituents and external reporting agencies.

Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field
  • Experience creating BI / interactive reports and visualizations for constituent use employing tools such as WebFOCUS, Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, Shiny, Cognos, etc
  • Experience in writing complex SQL queries using Oracle’s client toolsets such as SQL Developer or PL/SQL
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively apply business rules to programming and reporting projects
  • Must be available for synchronous communication during normal business hours, typically 8 am to 5 pm Mountain Time
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Proven ability to work independently and as an integral member of a team
  • Experience employing strong communication and collaboration skills to maintain effective team structure and ensure timely completion of projects
  • Demonstrated commitment to data quality and integrity
  • Demonstrated focus on customer/client in completing projects
  • Prior professional IT experience working with higher education data or in an Institutional Research office
  • Familiarity with database modeling and Business Intelligence
  • Experience building dashboards in Power BI platform
