Position Summary
The Clinician provides co-occurring counseling and treatment (related to the employee’s scope of practice) to clients with dual diagnosis issues, performs discharge and referral summaries for clients and maintains client case files, in addition to the responsibility for the general psychosocial assessment and intervention with clients, significant others, and the residential SUD team. The Clinician will be responsible for reviewing treatment plans, clinical assessments and determining if patients meet medical necessity for treatment (under the supervision of an LPHA).
Required Qualifications
- MSW or MFT degree in related field required. ACSW or AMFTI preferred.
- Two plus years experience counseling addicts; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Knowledge and training in substance abuse and related health issues (i.e. HIV, Hepatitis C, etc.) and recovery protocols.
- Knowledge of the local treatment community and referrals.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
- Computer (PC) literate in general office functions such as word processing, email and database software. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Adherence to infection control procedures, including but not limited to, standard precautions of temperature monitoring, hand washing, symptom self-monitoring, masking and social distancing.
- Assist and support the Center/Department/Program to meet standards of High Reliability.
- Valid California Driver’s License, with insurable driving record.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide counseling and program treatment SUD services to clients with substance abuse challenges, involving alcohol and other drugs including addressing mental and emotional problems affecting the client’s relationships with significant others.
- Review clinical assessments for determination of medical necessity and document evidence of medical necessity.
- Review and sign client treatment plans.
- Provide ancillary support services to family members (including significant others) as required for the primary client's counseling.
- Assume responsibility for an assigned caseload of clients that include assessments, treatment plans and discharge summary.
- Perform discharge and referral summaries for clients ending their treatment with the agency.
- Maintain client case files which document the client's progress and update the treatment plans as required addressing new issues of treatment as they develop.
- Provide crisis interventions.
- Provide consultation, technical assistance and/or delivery of direct client psychosocial support services as needed.
- Conduct educational presentations to carry the agency position and information on substance abuse and related topics to the community as requested.
- Participate in client review teams as appropriate.
- Train staff to be sensitive to the relationship between personal and environmental issues.
- Ability to achieve compliance status of audits from various contractual regulations.
- Provide appropriate referral information to clients and the public for services and opportunities not provided by our agency as needed.
- Perform related duties as necessary to the operation of the agency's programs.
- Act as liaison with other service providers, both in the agency and in the outside treatment community, as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
The work environment is characteristic of a medical clinic environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and arms to reach. The employee is also required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must also possess hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
The employee may be in contact with individuals and families in crisis who may be ill, using substances and/or not attentive to personal health and safety for themselves or their homes. The employee may experience a number of unpleasant sensory demands associated with the client’s use of alcohol and drugs, and the lack of personal care. The employee may also be exposed to bodily fluids (blood, urine) and hazardous chemicals.
