The Operations Manager - CNC Machine Shop @ Imperial Machine & Tool in Columbia, NJ is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the shop’s daily operations, ensuring that production processes are efficient, cost-effective, and meet the highest standards of quality. This role includes managing CN machining, welding, assembly departments and personnel, optimizing workflows, coordinating production schedules, and maintaining safety standards. The Operations Manager ensures that shop staff are adequately trained on and following processes and procedures in a contract manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Production Management - Oversees CNC machining, welding, assembly operations to ensure timely and accurate production. Works with Planning to manage production schedules to meet customer deadlines and delivery requirements. Monitors machine/operator efficiency and downtime. Coordinates with the engineering team to ensure that machine setups are properly prepared for production runs and that all necessary materials and tools are available.

 

  • Process Improvement & Efficiency - Continuously evaluates and improves manufacturing processes, including CNC machine setups, tooling, and operations workflows while maintaining compliance with AS9100 and Quality Management Systems. Identifies and implements lean manufacturing principles to reduce waste.

 

  • Team Leadership & Staff Management - Supervises and leads a team of CNC Programmers, CNC machinists, CNC operators, and production workers. Provides training and mentorship to staff to ensure they are skilled, efficient, and follow best practices in machining and safety. Conducts regular performance evaluations, sets goals for team members, and encourages career development. Addresses and resolves employee concerns, fostering a positive and productive work environment.

 

  • Maintenance & Equipment Management - Oversees routine and preventative maintenance schedules for CNC machine tool assets and other shop equipment to mitigate downtime. Schedules maintenance or repair with internal and external resources as needed.

 

  • Budgeting and Cost Tracking - Monitors expenses and identifies cost-saving opportunities. Works with Quality to track scrap, tooling costs, labor efficiency. Works with senior management to forecast future needs for equipment, materials, and personnel.

 

  • Maintaining Quality Standards – Holds staff accountable to meeting stringent standards and following prescribed methods. Works closely with Quality to ensure parts are being checked at the machine, and that root causes of defects are identified and corrected.

 

  • Reporting – Communicates clearly to management and other stakeholders regarding backlog, status, challenges, need for customer input etc.

 

Necessary skills/competencies:

  • Minimum of 5 years in CNC Machining and manufacturing management in a machining or fabrication environment

  • Programming CNC Milling, Lathes and CAD CAM experience a plus.

  • Experience using precision measuring tools (e.g. micrometers, dial bore, thread gauges)

  • Experience with supporting Quality initiatives, root cause investigations, corrective action implementation

  • Intermediate understanding of 2d blueprints and GD&T

  • Some experience working with shop ERP system (e.g. JobBoss, Epicor)

  • Proficient in use of MS Office Suite, MS Excel and MS Outlook in particular

  • Candidate must live within driving distance of Columbia NJ and be able to work onsite 5 days a week
