Summary
The Controls Engineer will design, develop, install, and maintain equipment used to monitor and control engineering systems and processes. This role includes supporting electrical designs, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning generator control systems, with a focus on achieving project milestones while adhering to safety and quality standards.
Role & Responsibilities
- Create and follow electrical design schedules, ensuring alignment with project timelines.
- Test, evaluate, modify, and calibrate products and instruments.
- Analyze plant processes and implement improvements to optimize operations.
- Troubleshoot hardware and process issues.
- Perform technical calculations and ensure compliance with safety standards and legal requirements.
- Design, test, and commission custom switchgear and generator control systems.
- Direct CAD designers for wiring and assembly drawings.
- Develop control software and create PLC programs for generator paralleling systems.
- Create and maintain bills of materials in ERP systems.
- Simultaneously execute multiple projects.
Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills (Required):
- Proficiency in at least one IEC 61131 PLC Programming language (Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, etc.).
- Expertise in PLC platforms such as Schneider Momentum, M340, M580, AB Control/Compact Logix, Woodward MSLC/DSLC, Easy Gen, and LS5 Architecture.
- Ability to design, test, and commission control systems, including interfacing with various manufacturers.
- Strong understanding of industry regulations and requirements (e.g., NEC, UL 508/891/1558/MV, CSA 22-2, ANSI).
Technical Skills (Desired):
- Knowledge of protective relays for generator and utility protection applications.
Soft Skills (Required):
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Leadership and mentoring skills to support team members.
Soft Skills (Desired):
- Business and commercial acumen.
- Excellent interpersonal and attention-to-detail skills.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- 5–7 years of experience in a related field (internships considered).
- Associate degree with 7+ years of experience or Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience will also be considered.
Work Environment
- Office and air-conditioned manufacturing facility.
- PPE required when on-site.
- Team environment with 5-8 engineers, reporting to the Engineering Manager.
