Position Overview:

The BB Community Empowrment Coordinator's position will primarily focus on providing training, workshops and events that will enhance the knowledge base of the members of the Highbridge community that display interest in participating. The coordinator will focus on the three key areas: that of health and nutrition, contemporary parening ("Parenting in the 2020s"), and financial management to impact families' overall physical well-being, build parents' and caregivers' resilience factors, and propel families toward economic self-sufficiency. It is anticipated that trainings and workshops for all three topic areas will be implemented during the latter part of the first uear of programming. The Community Empowerment Coordinator will work directly with some members of the FEC Advisory Board and with volunteers from the FEC/CPP that will all teach classes/workshops. Participants will be offered one-to-one sessions where an Individualized Action Plan (IAP) to be developed. These IAPs will be constructed by the Coordinator and FEC and CPP staff with maximum input from the community members requesting this service. The ultimate goal of the IAP would be for the community member to have a plan that will spell out how their progress will be achieved.

Position Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with 2 + years outreach experience in a human service setting, or equivalent work experience
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively and must be an excellent trainer. Needs to possess the ability to motivate community member, have knowledge and insights to guide the community partnerships. Experience in human services/community organizing. Candidate must have personal and/or professional knowledge of Community District 4 strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the issues of the local Bronx community.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the issues facing Black, African and Latino families.
  • Must be passionate about working with high-risk families to cope with the turmoil caused by racism, inequality, and single parenting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with youth and staff
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a must or multilingual
