Summary
The Food Service Coordinator (Cook) supervises food preparation and serves meals and snacks to center children and staff. The Food Service Coordinator is responsible for maintenance, cleanliness, inventory and safety of kitchen.
Duties
•Supervising substitute kitchen staff – directing the individual on what to do on planned absences
•Prepare healthy breakfast, lunch, and up to two snacks on time and in accordance with licensing regulations, state law, USDA child care food practices and all policies and procedures of the Center
•Plan and revise cyclical menus (as needed)
•Uses preventative maintenance with all kitchen equipment
•Trains staff on potential hazards and general food safety standard
•Monitors food loss to minimize food waste
•Determine needed food and kitchen supply purchases within set budget, order and monitor food and supply inventory with Food Supply Coordinator – communicates all stocking needs for kitchen operation with special attention to freshness dates
•Maintain special diet (allergies and intolerances) information on all children to ensure special diet information is adhered to and monitored (using first in-first out system of food/beverage usage)
•Keep a sanitary work area according to government and Center regulations
•Attend USDA training workshops (as required)
•Discuss pertinent problems with the Center Director or Assistant Director
•Provide clear instructions available for substitute cook
•Completing all necessary paperwork in a neat and timely fashion including (but not limited to) weekly menus and daily refrigeration temperature logs
•Wearing suitable and neat clothing for working in the kitchen, including hair coverings
•Attending all staff workshops, work days, and meetings as required
•Complete ten continuing DCYF sponsored STARS trainings each year
•Attending all Community Day Center for Children family functions as required.
•In an emergency disaster, employee is required to stay at work until released by an administrative authority
•Other duties as deemed necessary by the administration
Requirements
● Maintain current WA state food handler’s permit
●Ability to pass a Department of Children, Youth and Families criminal background check
●Washington State Driver’s License or Identification
●Meet licensing pre-training requirements: Infant, Child and Adult CPR/First Aid certification; Bloodborne Pathogens/HIV training; 30 hours of STARS Basic training within 120 days of employment
●Knowledgeable in healthy food preparation best practices, Department of Children, Youth and Families licensing requirements, and state and national laws pertaining to cooking for a child care facility.
●Creative chef capable of creating healthy meals that kids enjoy
●Enjoys working with children to encourage healthy eating habits
●Regular, predictable attendance, arriving on time each day and not frequently absent without approval
●Commitment to sustaining a culturally diverse work environment and fighting bias
●Ability to communicate effectively and relate sensitively to adults and children from diverse ethnic and socio-economic groups, both verbally and in writing
●Proficiency in oral and written English language
●Dependable, able to arrive on time each day
●The usual methods of performing the job's daily functions require lifting up to 50 lbs., carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, sitting and rising from the floor, kneeling and/or crouching, and significant finger dexterity, and the ability to spend approximately 80-90% of the day walking or standing
