RxBenefits is a leading provider of full-service pharmacy benefit administration solutions, occupying a unique and fast-growing niche in the healthcare benefits industry. With the rising cost of prescription drugs, small- and medium-sized self-insured employers look to partner with Pharmacy Benefits Managers (PBMs) to reduce costs, but ultimately face many challenges during this historically complex and opaque process. The VP of Product Engineering is responsible for creating a technical roadmap to align with company’s technical framework and vision. Identifying opportunities for a scalable architecture and delivering value through new products and services for RxBenefits partners and customers: employers, members, and brokers. This leader will champion the cause of evaluating and sizing various initiatives and provide overall technical direction and leadership to meet our strategic initiatives and goals. They must possess a firm understanding of the key strategic elements. They must also have a solid technical grasp of architecture components – web, mobile and hardware – so they can anticipate the risks and the technology choices to be made. A strong work ethic committed to defining outcomes which will impact our business with innovative product solutions.
A very personable style and ability to build consensus amongst various stakeholders in the organization. This leader works with all stakeholders i.e., product, clinical, IT, data, analytics and other members of senior leadership team to fully understand the technical landscape and define an overarching architecture meeting needs across all initiatives including integration of AI and Generative AI into the framework.
A passionate leader will provide direction to the team with a lead-by-example approach and must be willing to roll up their sleeves and face issues head-on. Furthermore, they must be a highly empathetic and driven team leader who possesses the ability and desire to make a large impact on the healthcare industry.
Essential Job Responsibilities Include:
- Develop a technical roadmap which outlines the steps and objectives needed to achieve the company's technical vision and turn it into tangible products for customers. The technical roadmap may include specific metrics, custom dashboards, and specific tasks for team members to complete and may involve breaking down larger goals into smaller tasks and organizing sprints to track progress.
- Collaborating with executive leadership by providing expertise and guidance on projects, operations, and systems.
- Responsible for creating a yearly budget for the software engineering department, considering the number of departments and personnel required for the project, as well as any external collaborators that may be necessary, including managing cashflow and oversee important buying and spending decisions around key tools and technologies.
- Communicates with key stakeholders to discuss how the technical strategy aligns with the company's goals and overall vision. This may involve regular meetings, communication groups, and presenting data or reports to demonstrate the progress and efficiency of the technical staff's and managers' work.
- Identifying and implementing new technologies and trends to improve organizational capabilities including assessment of technical debt and making recommendations in line with scalability and company’s vision.
- Lead efforts to optimize engineering solutions for scalability, performance, and reliability including collaboration with security teams to perform regular assessments and address potential vulnerabilities.
- Responsible for ensuring the engineering teams are delivering high-quality products on time and within budget. To ensure timely and high-quality delivery, employ several different strategies, such as setting clear goals and timelines, providing the teams with the resources and support they need to be successful, identifying and addressing any bottlenecks or roadblocks, and continuously improving the processes and methodologies used by the engineering teams to increase efficiency and productivity.
- Responsible for ensuring strong and capable team is in place that can deliver high-quality work. This involves a thorough understanding of our technical stack and corresponding skills and abilities required to deliver high quality solutions. Ability to build a team of full stack developers and upskill talent where necessary.
- Conduct in-depth technical reviews, providing feedback on architecture, design, and code quality.
- Strong emphasis on AI and Generative AI technologies including LLM’s and non-relational databases including ability implement via integrating with existing systems and platforms.
- Lead efforts to optimize engineering solutions for scalability, performance, and reliability including collaborate with security teams to perform regular assessments and address potential vulnerabilities.
- Provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams, including product management, UX/UI design, QA, and DevOps.
- Act as a thought leader within the organization and the broader industry, contributing to technical blogs, conferences, and community engagement.
- Hands-on involvement in setting engineering standards, coding, debugging, and troubleshooting to maintain a deep understanding of the software development lifecycle.
- Work closely with offshore resources and put collaborative processes in place to build unified teams across geography all in synch to deliver on projects.
Required Skills / Experience:
- Expert verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly convey results, methodology, assumptions etc.
- Must be knowledgeable about industry trends, best practices, and change management.
- Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Extensive experience in engineering leadership with a focus on scalable and distributed systems.
- Extensive experience in leading engineering teams and building a culture of high performance and accountability.
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages, with a strong preference for expertise in strategic technology planning.
- Proven track record of leading and delivering complex projects from conception to production.
- Deep understanding of software architecture, design principles, and best practices.
- Experience with cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and containerization technologies.
- Familiarity with HealthTech, benefits administration, or related industries is a plus.
- Experience in product lifecycle management including Agile Framework.
- Experience managing software products with competing priorities and teams of direct and indirect reports as well as resources from other teams within the organization.
- Highly empathetic leader of both team development and culture.
- Engineering or similar degree required; master’s degree preferred
- Willing to travel to Birmingham, AL and other conferences as needed.
