This is a full-time role with work hours of 9 am to 6 pm with a one hour unpaid lunch. Once training and onboarding are complete, you may work from home up to one day per week. This role reports to Auna Castellon, College and Career Readiness Manager.

Starting pay is $25/hour, which is equivalent to $53,000/year.

Who You Are

  • You are a social services or education professional and ideally, you at least one year of experience supporting people who are seeking their GED.
  • You have work or lived experience in the Native community, or you have a commitment to learn Native history and the unique strengths and challenges of Urban Natives.
  • You are an exceptional coach. Ideally, you have at least one year of experience as an advocate, coach or tutor.

  • You are a jump-right-in problem solver. You are an expert at removing barriers, such as transportation or child care.
  • You are a calming presence. You are able to stay composed and exercise good judgement in stressful situations. You don't get upset even when others around you get upset.
  • You have experience utilizing a case management database. You know how to document notes and you do so in a timely fashion each day. You don’t procrastinate entering your notes.
  • You have superb follow up. You have good personal systems to make sure you don’t forget to follow up with clients or with your teammates.
  • If you speak another language, it is a plus.
  • You have Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid and Automatic External Defibulator (AED) certification, or you are able to be certified within the first 60 days of hire.
  • You don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves and pitch in, even when it’s not your job.
  • You have your own car and a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license with no more than one major violation in the last three years, so that you can be covered under NAYA’s liability insurance. You don’t mind using your personal vehicle for work purposes (mileage reimbursed).

What You’ll Do

  • Recruit and enroll participants (up to age 24) into NAYA’s Re-engagement Program (GED). Our partner organizations will deliver the GED training. You’re not the teacher, you are the coach and tutor.
  • 70% of your time will be spent in direct service to your participants, 10% doing outreach to recruit more participants, and 10% attending NAYA staff meetings, trainings and events.
  • Remove barriers such as providing transportation to a participant who needs a ride, or assisting with childcare support.
  • Establish strong partnerships with organizations that deliver GED services. Become an active member of the GED community in Portland.
  • Establish strong partnerships with organizations that offer GED support services, such as career exploration or tutoring.
  • Provide tutoring to your participants, primarily in math and science.
  • Assist participants in developing their education and career goals and plans.
  • Complete daily data entry and maintain case files in accordance with program procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and practice discretion and respect when discussing client information.
