About the Role

At Paylocity, Software Engineering Managers are technology focused leaders that act as the bridge between an engineering team’s outcomes and the business strategies driving those outcomes. It is a critical role in our Product and Technology organization. This key role serves as manager of a team of roughly 12 engineers and is responsible for driving workstream focused outcomes in our payroll compliance domain, while working to achieve a high level of performance and efficiency. This position requires commitment to exceptional results, a strong desire for continuous improvement and the ability to build a collaborative culture within the team.

What will you do:

· Manage your team of engineers by instilling a sense of ownership of the systems in your domain, and empowering them to have input on technical decisions

· Plan, execute, and offer insights and direction against numerous in-flight initiatives spanning multiple products and/or services

· Work with your team and leaders to develop good engineering practices, creating a culture of engineering excellence

· Thrive in an agile environment with 2 week sprint cycles, be an agile coach and continuously manage your teams’ backlog

· Own the overall health and engineering quality of your product and demonstrate your ability to help scale and improve upon these systems

· Break down the complexity of projects, services, and processes while communicating with other engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders

· Speak confidently about project timelines, system architectures, engineering practices, quality and more

· Raise risks immediately while proposing potential directional solutions to mitigate

· Help guide your team in the creation of properly leveled estimates in order to set realistic expectations with stakeholders and leadership

· Implement routines and frameworks for efficient communication and decision making

· Keep your team informed of broader initiatives throughout the organization and help them integrate when needed

· Negotiate delivery tradeoffs with your Product partner to ensure tech debt and maintenance work is managed appropriately

· Help mentor and grow each one of your engineers to help them achieve the next level of their careers

· Work with Talent Acquisition partners in the hiring process to build a high functioning team

· Conduct interviews for candidates, and develop interview loops appropriate for the level of role being hired

· Contribute to the sense of psychological safety on your team

· Hold regular 1:1s with your direct reports to ensure the overall health of your organization is understood

· Give regular and clear feedback around individual's performance

· Foster technical decision making on the team, but make final decisions when necessary

· Lead the team during operational major incidents

· Perform root cause analysis

· Identify improvement areas to avoid repeat incidents

· Creating and delivering incident post-mortems where applicable

· Create opportunities for individuals for growth, recognize team members publicly for achievements, and reward team members appropriately for high performance

· Hold yourself and your team accountable for delivering high quality, secure, reusable, and scalable software

· Build and maintain a healthy relationship with product counterparts in the domain


What you bring:

· High school Diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor's degree in engineering or similar preferred

· 3+ years of Software Engineering Management experience

· A demonstrable level of successful strategy implementation along with proven outcomes

· Collaborative project planning capabilities that factor in risk/reward tradeoffs, assumptions and confidence levels

· An exceptional ability to communicate with a collaborative demeanor

· A history of both direct and indirect influence using a data-driven approach

· Hands-on experience working in cloud technologies (preferably AWS)

· Knowledge around money movement transactions (such as ACH, Wires, Checks, etc) and ledgers is a big plus

· Working understanding of various architectural patterns like SOA and Microservices and the related advantages and trade-offs

· Experience leveraging observability and monitoring tools such as DataDog

· Exposure to work management tools such as Atlassian’s Jira

· Versed in the design and development of highly scalable modern API based platforms

· Must show passion for the role and take responsibility for the team’s deliverables

· Able to work effectively in a team environment in an agile fashion

· Practical and creative in problem-solving

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $129,400 - $184,800 /yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
