Job DescriptionJob DescriptionPosition/s:    Part-Time ESL Basic Beginning and Low-Level English Instructor(s), Adult Program Location:      In-person Instructor, Homeless Shelter, Citizens Inn, Peabody                     Hours:         Morning hours Monday – Thursday (10-12 pm) 4 hrs/wk                     Afternoon classes – Monday – Thursday (11:30-12:30 pm) 4 hrs/wkPlease note that class days and times are flexible and may vary based on the availability of both the instructor and the students. We look forward to reviewing your application  NAAM is a non-profit organization which provides social support services to refugees and immigrants residing on the North Shore. The core services include: ESOL classes, employment assistance and job coaching, skills training, case management, after-school and summer programming for youth and children K-12, citizenship assistance and civics/history classes. ESL Basic Beginning and Low Level English Instructors needed for the in-person adult teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) classes focused on employment readiness to adult learners residing in a shelter. The program is specifically designed for low/low beginner-level English speakers, aiming to equip them with the language skills necessary to obtain and retain employment. Instructors will also assess student progress and compile reports for the funder. The ideal candidate is passionate about adult education, experienced in ESL instruction, and committed to empowering marginalized communities. Creativity, compassion and high energy is a must. 

 Job Functions and Responsibilities: Classroom Instruction:
  • Teach ESL classes focused on basic employment-related language, including common workplace terminology, simple instructions, and conversational English.
  • Deliver practical lessons on small talk, understanding basic job-related vocabulary, and following simple directions.
  • Create an engaging and supportive learning environment for students with minimal English proficiency.
 Curriculum & Lesson Planning:
  • Utilize the existing curriculum provided by the program and develop detailed lesson plans based on it.
  • Ensure lesson plans are tailored to meet the specific needs of very low-level English learners and aligned with the employment focus.
  • Incorporate diverse teaching methods to support different learning styles, including visual aids and interactive exercises.
 Assessment & Reporting:
  • Administer pre- and post-assessments provided by the program to evaluate student progress in employment-related English skills.
  • Track and document attendance, participation, and student progress throughout the program.
  • Compile reports on student progress and program outcomes for submission to the funder, and submit these reports to the ESL School Director and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
    Collaboration & Communication:
  • Work closely with the ESL School Director/Operations (Erica) and Director of Curriculum and Instruction (Mia) to ensure the program’s smooth operation and alignment with curriculum goals.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of the program.
  • Collaborate with shelter staff as needed to ensure student needs are met.
 Requirements:·        At least 1-2 years of experience teaching ESL, particularly to low-level or adult learners.·        Experience in employment-related ESL topics tailored for very low-level English speakers.·        Strong communication, organizational, and reporting skills, with the ability to adapt to various learning styles and educational backgrounds.·        Comfort with computers and online platforms, as staff meetings will be conducted virtually and digital tools such as YouTube videos, eBooks, and authentic online content (e.g., job boards like Indeed) are encouraged for classroom use.·        Experience working with immigrant or refugee populations is a plus.·        Sensitivity to working in a shelter environment and addressing the unique challenges faced by residents.Preferred:- TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate- Experience of teaching ESL to adult learners      - Speak at least one additional language (preferably Spanish, Swahili, Pashto/Farci, Arabic, or Haitian Creole)
