Job Title: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter/Teacher
Reports To: Director of Pupil Services
Location: Middle School
Employment Type: Full-Time
Grade Level: K-12
Job Overview:
The ASL Teacher will develop and deliver a comprehensive American Sign Language curriculum to students in grades K-12, fostering a supportive learning environment for all students, including Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) individuals. The teacher will promote cultural understanding and awareness of Deaf culture while ensuring alignment with state standards and educational best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instruction and Curriculum Development
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that teach ASL vocabulary, grammar, and syntax while incorporating Deaf culture and community.
- Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to engage students with diverse learning styles and needs.
- Adapt instruction to accommodate students at varying proficiency levels in ASL.
- Encourage the use of ASL in the classroom and integrate Deaf culture into daily learning.
- Student Assessment and Progress Monitoring
- Assess student progress regularly using a variety of methods, including observation, assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Provide constructive feedback to students to support their ASL proficiency development.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments, and grades in compliance with school and district policies.
- Collaboration and Professional Development
- Work closely with other teachers, interpreters, and special education staff to support Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.
- Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings and implement accommodations as needed for DHH students.
- Engage in professional development opportunities to stay updated on ASL and Deaf education advancements.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings, department meetings, and parent-teacher conferences as needed.
- Classroom Management and Student Engagement
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and respectful of all students.
- Encourage positive social interactions and respect for Deaf culture among all students.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a safe and functional learning atmosphere.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, ASL, Linguistics, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Certification: Valid teaching certification in ASL or Deaf Education as required by the Department of Instruction (20 interpreter license)
- Experience: Previous teaching experience in ASL or working with DHH students is preferred.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language and a strong understanding of Deaf culture.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to develop engaging and culturally relevant ASL lessons.
- Familiarity with educational technologies that can support ASL instruction.
Working Conditions:
- Environment: Classroom setting with possible duties in multiple school sites or virtual platforms, depending on district needs.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to perform tasks requiring extended periods of signing, standing, and speaking.
