We are in search of a Junior Materials Scientist to join our dynamic team at Sandia National Laboratories. This role is designed for early-career professionals eager to contribute to innovative materials science projects.
Eligibility Criteria:
This is a Limited Term Employee (LTE) position, initially set for a one-year duration, with the potential for renewal based on performance and operational needs.
Individuals in LTE roles may apply for permanent positions within Sandia as internal candidates and may be considered for conversion to regular employment, contingent upon funding availability and job performance.
Job Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will engage in advanced materials characterization and analysis, utilizing cutting-edge techniques to support national security initiatives. Key responsibilities include:
- Operating and maintaining a dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) laboratory.
- Collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and scientists to achieve research objectives and secure funding.
- Developing innovative applications and methodologies for FIB/SEM techniques.
- Conducting research to enhance understanding of materials microstructure and performance relationships.
- Presenting findings through reports, conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
Daily Activities:
On a typical day, you may be involved in:
- Conducting both collaborative and independent research projects.
- Demonstrating proficiency in FIB/SEM operations, including sample preparation and analytical techniques.
- Enhancing your expertise in ion-beam and electron-beam characterization methods.
- Maintaining a culture of safety and supporting the development of laboratory safety protocols.
- Providing insights into material microstructure and instrument capabilities.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in materials science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in FIB operation and sample preparation.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate research findings effectively.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Preferred:
- Experience with a variety of materials and analytical techniques.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Understanding of microstructural features and their impact on material properties.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Experience in laboratory management and safety planning.
