Job Summary:
Under the guidance of the principal and educators, the educational support specialist aids instructors in various capacities related to the teaching and oversight of students.


Essential Functions:
1. Assists in preparing instructional materials.
2. Aids in student instruction and other classroom activities as required.
3. May provide tutoring to students individually or in small groups.
4. Assists in administering various assessments and monitors students' academic performance.
5. Maintains accurate records for assigned students or groups.
6. Fosters a school environment that encourages students to develop and sustain a positive self-image.
7. Upholds professional confidentiality regarding student information.
8. Maintains effective and constructive communication with students, educators, parents, and administration.
9. Collaborates effectively within a team setting.
10. Must be able to adhere to assigned working hours.

Required Education and Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. If employed in a Title 1 school, one of the following is required: 48 hours of college credit or successful completion of the ParaPro exam.


Required Knowledge and Skills:
1. Basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills.
2. Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
3. Capability to follow provided instructions.
4. Ability to engage positively with students.
5. Competence to assist students in various situations as they arise.


Prior Experience:
No prior experience required.


Decision Making:
Makes decisions regarding the most effective methods to accomplish tasks assigned by classroom educators. Must be able to follow directions and work within established guidelines while offering suggestions when appropriate.


Interactions with Others:
Engages positively with students, educators, social workers, psychologists, support staff, and administrators.


Supervisory Responsibility:
Oversees students receiving support and may supervise students in service locations outside the classroom as needed.


Working Environment:
The work setting is primarily within the classroom. May be required to work indoors and outdoors to complete assigned tasks. Working conditions may vary in temperature and may involve managing stress from disruptive students or groups.


Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this role, the employee is required to communicate effectively. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and bend, kneel, or crouch. Occasionally, the role may require the use of hands for handling or feeling and may involve climbing or balancing. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Must be able to stand or sit for extended periods and lift or move up to 20 lbs.
