Nights The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, recognized as Indiana's pioneering community mental health facility, delivers extensive support for emotional and psychological challenges, including severe mental health disorders and substance use issues.

This center provides both inpatient and outpatient care, featuring various outreach facilities along with clinic- and community-based services.

Job Role Summary: The Assessment and Intervention Center (AIC) Emergency Medical Technician is tasked with managing intake processes, overseeing withdrawal management protocols, and assessing the medical requirements of residents at the Assessment and Intervention Center.

The role involves ensuring that intakes align with eligibility standards, evaluating medical and withdrawal necessities upon admission and as required, while maintaining the overall safety of the environment.

This position collaborates with physicians and other healthcare professionals to execute treatment plans, administer medications, and provide injections in accordance with prescribed directives and protocols for the Assessment and Intervention Center.

Additionally, the EMT engages residents in ongoing dialogues about recovery and necessary connections to primary care, behavioral health, and/or substance use treatment.

  • Promotes and exemplifies a strengths-based, community-focused model of care.
  • Operates under the authority of protocols established by the Medical Director of the Assessment and Intervention Center.
  • Accountable for the management of controlled substances (narcotics).
  • Documents all pertinent information in a designated format.
  • Ensures the safety and security of residents, staff, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment, reports necessary repairs, and replenishes supplies as needed.
  • Conducts verbal interviews with residents to collect information regarding primary complaints and medical history.
  • Participates in a healthcare team approach for residents in line with policies and established protocols. May perform limited respiratory treatments, including O2 titration/oximetry, aerosols, IPPD/PPD, multi-dose inhaler treatments, sputum cultures, and ABGs.
  • May conduct phlebotomy procedures (e.g., venipuncture, capillary sticks).
  • May perform additional procedures such as medication administration and initiating IV-DCs.
  • Monitors vital signs; assists with personal hygiene; performs suctioning; may conduct Accuchecks; aids with tracheostomy care/ostomy care; performs neuro/vascular assessments; records resident weights; provides counseling/assistance with personal care.
  • Applies ACE wrapping; assists residents in ambulation; stimulates cognitive engagement.
  • Participates in in-service training, quality assurance initiatives, and mandatory departmental meetings.
  • Adapts activities/behaviors to ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of residents served (i.e., geriatric, adult) as outlined in unit age-specific and/or job-specific competencies.
Job Requirements:
  • Active certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in Indiana.
  • Current CPR and ACLS certifications.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as an RN or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in behavioral health or substance use treatment environments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with body substance isolation techniques to protect residents, self, and other providers from potential contamination. Understanding of safety precautions for the sick and injured. Ability to identify medical identification emblems that provide emergency care information. Knowledge of proper disposal of contaminated supplies and decontamination procedures.
  • Skills: Proficient in calculating drip rates and drug concentrations, administering approved intravenous medications as indicated by medical direction and/or established protocols. Capable of performing cardiac monitoring and interpreting 12-lead EKG results. Skilled in managing airways and ventilations, including BLS and ALS airways. Strong interpersonal communication skills; accurate in reading and recording information. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Abilities: Ability to perform approved interventions and assist residents as necessary. Competence in managing medical emergencies, including respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergic, behavioral, and environmental crises, as well as suspected poisonings and overdoses. Capacity to transport residents securely while providing ongoing emergency medical care as needed.
