Job Summary

As a Diagnostic Echocardiography Specialist at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care by performing and recording ultrasound diagnostic tests of all parts of the anatomy. Your expertise in operating sophisticated, multi-modality ultrasound equipment will ensure that patients receive accurate and timely results.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, adjust, manipulate, and control the use of all conventional and portable ultrasound, data processing, and ancillary equipment required for diagnostic echocardiography procedures.
• Perform adult and pediatric echo examinations, and assist with TEE procedures including routine measurements and calculations on all patient types.
• Assist physicians during sterile invasive procedures such as pericardialcentesis.
• Consult with referring physicians regarding medical history of the patient, discuss appropriate procedures required, maintain records and/or technical notations on each case as required by regulatory agencies, and insure files and records are properly completed with correct information.
• Consult with the reading cardiologist regarding echocardiography findings.
• Ensure immediate and accurate verification of charge code information into the Radiology Information System, and determines the diagnostic efficacy and completeness of each examination.
• Perform a variety of related clerical tasks, answering phones, relaying messages, entering transport requests, and stocking rooms.
• Assist in scheduling the flow of Echocardiography examinations to insure optimal utilization of equipment and personnel.
• Demonstrate and assist in instruction of Echocardiography technology student rotation and hospital procedures to other technical, non-professional and ancillary personnel and directly supervises the job activity.
• Participate in quarterly Quality assurance meetings.
• Maintain active credentialing for Adult Echocardiography.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a Sonography Program at an approved school of diagnostic imaging or a minimum of two years of supervised on the job training.
• Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and families who may be under physical and/or emotional stress and fellow employees.
• Analytical skills necessary to determine the best method of providing requested Echocardiogram s based on the specifics of the individual case. Ability to detect pathology based on the knowledge of physiologic causes and effects of diseases.
• Verbal communication skills necessary in order to exchange information on a professional basis with fellow professional, non-professional and ancillary personnel.
• Licensures, Certifications: Healthcare Provider (CPR Certification).
• Physical Requirements: Ability to position patients for up to 20% of work time and to stand and walk for up to 80% of work time. Ability to push and handle heavy equipment.
• Working Conditions: Normal patient care environment with occasional (less than20% of work time) exposure to patients with possible infectious diseases. Visual and mental fatigue from prolonged viewing of monitor screens (up to 50% of work time). Regular exposure to radiation with little or no chance of injury when established safety procedures are followed.
• Ability to work independently with minimal daily supervision.
