About the Role

The City of New York is seeking an Accessibility Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), you will play a critical role in ensuring our agency's compliance with accessibility laws, regulations, and policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the EEO office in carrying out the agency's increased accessibility efforts, as outlined in our 5-Year Accessibility Plan.
  • Ensure agency compliance with federal (ADA), state, and local accessibility laws, regulations, policies, and best practices.
  • Conduct analyses of agency accessibility compliance and identify accessibility barriers, recommending necessary adjustments.
  • Develop program policies for online reasonable accommodation request submissions and implement survey checklists to track accommodation needs.
  • Meet with employees to counsel them on reasonable accommodations, potential accessibility issues, and solutions.
  • Review requests for reasonable accommodations and related processes.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in the accessibility field, engaging with scientific journals, current events, thought leaders, DEI-based books, laws, and policies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to collaborate on implementing best practices and addressing accessibility needs.
  • Ensure CFB's internal and external events meet ADA requirements for both online and in-person events.
  • Work with EEO/DEI leadership to create an internal accessibility best practices guidebook.
  • Collaborate with EEO/DEI leadership and relevant agency parties to procure services enhancing the CFB's accessibility initiatives.
  • Lead internal accessibility efforts through internal communications, programming, and events.
  • Support the EEO/DEI office in preparing required reports, responses to audits, annual statements, and other EEO-related reporting to external parties.
  • Model Accessibility, EEO, and DEI prescribed behaviors and advance Access objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison with disability rights advocacy groups, government ADA coordinators, and other stakeholders to implement best practices.
  • Carry out action items as noted in the agency's 5-year accessibility plan, working with relevant agency stakeholders.
  • Support and provide assistance to members of the EEO/DEI office as needed.
  • Draft and facilitate training sessions to increase accessibility awareness among agency employees and advise relevant employees on accessibility procedures.
  • Participate in new staff hiring processes when assigned.
  • Ensure CFB employees or those seeking employment with the CFB know their rights under relevant Federal, New York State, and New York City employment laws.
  • Assist the agency in achieving its mission.
  • Maintain accurate records, ensuring the confidentiality of documents and records in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Carry out special projects/assignments as assigned.
Requirements
  • 2-3 years of relevant city, state, or federal government experience.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local EEO, accessibility, and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Knowledge of processes to maintain compliance with accessibility guidelines and requirements.
  • Familiarity with creating and administering trainings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, and prioritize objectives, exercising independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • A motivated, self-starter who adjusts readily to multiple demands, shifting priorities, and rapid change.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and research skills.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
