Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Specialist to join our team at Guthrie. As a Medical Laboratory Specialist, you will be responsible for performing laboratory tests and related computer, clerical, and technical functions. You will work independently, following established procedures and protocols, and exercise independent judgment and good judgment in interpreting testing or quality control, maintenance, and repair of equipment and records.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and solve problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  • Competently perform routine and complex laboratory procedures, both manual and automated.
  • Utilize the computer and various functions appropriately and efficiently.
  • Perform, analyze, and document quality control data, making judgments concerning results and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
  • Perform and document maintenance checks and adjustments on all appropriate instruments and equipment.
  • Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, and sensitivity, and specific factors that might influence test results in a competent manner.
  • Participate/assist in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of personnel, equipment, space, method comparison, cost analysis, and establishment of reference intervals.
  • Incorporate educational techniques in the instruction of new employees or students in the laboratory's instructional activities.
  • Recognize abnormal and critical results and communicate and document them following good patient care, regulatory, and procedural needs.
  • Provide direction and guidance to medical laboratory technicians and other support personnel.
  • Maintain proper specimen identification throughout all laboratory processes.
  • Properly organize, prioritize, distribute, and act on laboratory workload.
  • Document unusual situations and/or required non-conformities and report or refer to the appropriate person or supervisor.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of materials and either order or make recommendations to the Lab Supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean, neat work area during and at the end of scheduled work periods.
  • Communicate appropriate information regarding the section and testing status to incoming shifts.
  • Remain knowledgeable and maintain compliance with all departmental, organization, and regulatory agencies' rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Collect data, prepare charts, run tests, and make recommendations on new or different test procedures to the Lab Supervisor.
  • Observe proper safety practices in the performance of job duties.
  • Maintain a professional, mature, positive attitude while performing job duties.
  • May be required to collect blood/other samples from patients.
  • Will be required to work holidays, weekends, evenings, or night shifts depending on job assignment.
  • All acts and actions are as a laboratory professional.
  • Attend in-service classes or workshops relevant to the job and maintain required CEUs.
  • Additional duties may be required.

The contractual rate of pay for this per diem position is $50.98/hr.
