Job Summary

The Produce Assistant is a key member of the Natural Grocers team, responsible for assisting the Produce Manager in the successful operation and profitability of the produce department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service as a top priority, ensuring a positive shopping experience for all customers.
  • Inventory Management: Assist the Produce Manager in ordering and maintaining accurate inventory levels, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh produce.
  • Department Maintenance: Set and maintain the produce department on a daily basis, ensuring a visually appealing and well-stocked display of products.
  • Product Handling: Cull, crisp, rotate, and properly handle and store produce to ensure maximum freshness and quality.
  • Organic Produce: Ensure that only certified organic produce is ordered and received, meeting the company's high standards.
  • Store Standards: Ensure that all in-stock products meet company standards, maintaining a high level of quality and presentation.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure that all tools and equipment are cleaned and maintained in accordance with health department and company standards.
  • Receiving and Processing: Receive all incoming produce orders, processing and storing them in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Special Orders: Offer and follow up on special orders, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Training and Development: Assist in training and monitoring department personnel, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
  • Demos and Promotions: Conduct active and passive demos, promoting products and increasing sales.
  • Performance Management: Work with the Produce Manager to address performance issues within the department, ensuring a positive and productive work environment.
  • Register Functions: Handle register functions, including backup cashiering, managing customer returns, addressing customer complaints, and covering register shift changes.
  • Safety and Security: Maintain the safety and security of customers and employees, ensuring a secure and healthy shopping environment.
  • Product Knowledge: Continuously increase product knowledge, staying up-to-date on new products and trends.
  • Technology: Utilize email and IS programs as needed, staying connected with the team and management.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Complete DSR and closing cash processes as required, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
Requirements:
  • Education: High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: 1 year of experience in grocery, retail, or produce environment preferred; natural foods background is a plus.
  • Supervisory Experience: 1 year of experience supervising others preferred.
  • Food Safety Training: Ability to pass food safety training courses and/or certifications as required by law and maintain compliance.
  • Customer Service: Possess excellent customer service skills, providing a positive shopping experience for all customers.
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized with great attention to detail, managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to take direction and follow through, communicating effectively with the team and management.
  • Cash Handling: Must be cashier trained and able to count currency.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
