JOB SUMMARY:
The Trauma & Stroke Coordinator is responsible for overseeing, planning, executing, and assessing quality assurance initiatives, patient satisfaction metrics, and the overall performance of the stroke and trauma services. This role involves educating emergency department physicians and staff on identified opportunities for performance enhancement. The coordinator is tasked with gathering essential data to uphold trauma designation and ensuring timely submission to the Trauma Registry. Direct communication of findings and issues related to the Trauma Program with the Director of Critical Care is crucial. Additionally, the coordinator collects necessary data to maintain the Primary Stroke Center designation and communicates results/issues regarding the stroke program with the Director of Critical Care. Direct patient care may be performed as needed, adhering to the Registered Nurse scope of practice.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
  • Valid Registered Nurse License in the State of Texas
  • BSN required upon hire
  • CEN and SCRN certifications preferred
Minimum of 4.5 years of experience in Emergency Department Nursing.
  • Current certifications in CPR, ACLS, PALS, and ENPC
  • TNCC certification required
  • In-depth knowledge of Trauma Nursing principles and their application to ensure high-quality care for trauma patients
  • Comprehensive understanding of NIHSS and Stroke Patient Nursing principles, ensuring quality care for stroke patients
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Behavioral violence prevention certification as mandated
  • Completion of a TOPIC course

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist the ED Manager in evaluating co-workers' performance, orienting new staff, and ensuring nursing care aligns with departmental standards and physician directives for both Trauma Service and Stroke Program.
  • Establish patient care priorities based on critical needs and available resources including time, equipment, personnel, and supplies.
  • Adhere to hospital policies regarding stroke and trauma protocols.
  • Educate patients and their families on safety practices aimed at reducing or preventing traumatic injuries.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of nursing care in the patient's medical record, ensuring clarity, conciseness, timeliness, and completeness.
  • Apply principles of body mechanics to prevent injury to self and patients, ensuring a safe environment with immediate access to suction and oxygen at all bedsides.
  • Identify improvement opportunities through compliance monitoring with Joint Commission, CMS (Medicare), and Core Measures, educating staff on necessary compliance changes.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction survey results, identifying areas for improvement and collaborating with the ED Manager to implement changes.
  • Coordinate trauma care management throughout the continuum of care, including the development and implementation of protocols and practice management guidelines, while serving as a clinical resource.
  • Facilitate staff development across facilities, participate in case reviews, and assist in standardizing practice guidelines; provide education to ED staff, EMS, and other departments when improvement opportunities arise.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes and systemic issues related to quality care delivery, developing quality filters, audits, and case reviews, while identifying trends and sentinel events and proposing remedial actions while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Manage the financial aspects of the trauma program and represent the program on various committees, providing regular status reports to Quality/EPIC regarding the Trauma Center and any identified performance issues.
  • Engage in the development of trauma care systems at community, state, or national levels.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
