About Buffalo Trace DistilleryBuffalo Trace Distillery is a family-owned company based in Franklin County, Kentucky, with a rich distilling tradition dating back to 1787. Our fully operational distillery produces bourbon, rye, and vodka on site and is listed on the National Historic Register. We have been awarded seven distillery titles since 2000 and have garnered more than 150 awards for our premium whiskies.
Job DescriptionThe Homeplace Horticultural Supervisor oversees employees responsible for enhancements and daily maintenance of the Buffalo Trace grounds and arboretum. This role is responsible for employee training, seasonal planning, and management of the work order system to achieve the primary objective of keeping the arboretum and grounds in show conditions.
Key Responsibilities- Ensure the Buffalo Trace grounds and arboretum are in show condition at all times and maintain National Landmark status.
- Oversee the overall health of the Buffalo Trace plant collection and assist with the horticultural maintenance program.
- Distribute daily assigned tasks to the grounds staff, oversee and inspect all work performed, and ensure correct horticultural practices are executed to the highest standards.
- Assist with updating plant records and maintaining labeling for the collection.
- Lead training and develop comprehensive cultural practice programs for technicians assigned to the work duties for the grounds.
- Execute plans for seasonal color and landscape enhancements.
- Assist with weekly garden and arboretum tours.
- Assist with execution of public educational events and programs related to arboretum accreditation requirements.
- Support the overall safety program through excellence in project management.
- Assist with planning for arboretum development and achievement of botanical garden accreditation.
- Assist with scheduling and planning for the grounds team, working directly with the Homeplace Planner/Coordinator and Management Team.
- Assist with developing Homeplace grounds SOPs.
- Assist with managing outside contractors for grounds-related work.
- Associates degree or higher in the field of horticulture from an accredited university.
- Minimum 5 years of supervisory or management experience in the horticultural field.
This role requires a strong knowledge of plant species and ornamental horticulture, as well as supervisory, training, and communication skills. The ability to work with a team, problem solve, and organize is essential. Knowledge of plant collections database software and practices is also required. Exceptional attention to detail and a drive for results are necessary for success in this role.
This position requires the ability to work in outdoor weather conditions and to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds without assistance. Strong communication skills and the ability to work 8-hour shifts are also required. Overtime may be necessary, and the ability to pay attention to detail is essential.
