About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Deputy Sheriff to join our team in Frederick County, VA. As a key member of our law enforcement department, you will play a critical role in maintaining public safety and upholding the law.

Job Summary

This is a basic entry-level opportunity that requires no prior experience. You will be responsible for performing difficult protective service work, including patrols, enforcing laws, investigating criminal activity, gathering and processing evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, preparing detailed reports of incidents, and ensuring the safety of the public.

Key Responsibilities
  • Responds to calls for assistance, completes calls by determining the true nature of the situation, and takes appropriate action;
  • Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims, gathers physical evidence, preserves it for court, conducts follow-up investigations as needed;
  • Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, court orders, makes arrests, prepares reports, testifies in court;
  • Enforces traffic laws, issues citations for traffic violations, performs radar enforcement, traffic control, motorist assists, etc.;
  • Conducts and documents security checks of homes, neighborhoods, and businesses in assigned areas;
  • Operates computer to run checks, criminal histories, missing person's checks, etc.;
  • Contacts complainants and/or victims of crimes within a reasonable length of time, keeps them informed of progress of investigations;
  • Prepares, processes, and/or transmits various reports as required;
  • Answers questions asked by the general public, works with juveniles and adults in related matters, refers public to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required;
  • Attends shift meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote job performance;
  • Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearms, evasive action/driving skills;
  • Patrols and guards courthouses, grand jury rooms, or assigned areas to provide security, enforce laws, maintain order, and arrest violators;
  • Complies with all Department Standard Operating Procedures, official orders, and directives;
Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED issued by a state department of education required;
  • Incumbent must attend and graduate from Law Enforcement Academy and obtain Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certification;
  • Complete the required Field Training and probationary period;
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Certification in the Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN), and Certification in firearms proficiency required by the end of the probationary period;
