Job Title: School Nurse 10-Months

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse to join our team at Calvert County Public Schools. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality health services to students and staff, promoting a safe and healthy learning environment, and collaborating with teachers and administrators to support student learning.

Job Summary:

The School Nurse will serve as the leader of the school health nursing team, responsible for conducting health assessments, obtaining health and developmental histories, and screening and evaluating findings or deficits of state-mandated screenings. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing and implementing health plans, interpreting health status to parents and school personnel, and initiating referrals to parents, school personnel, and community health resources.

Responsibilities:
  • Promote and protect the optimal health status of children
  • Conduct health assessments and obtain health and developmental histories
  • Screen and evaluate findings or deficits of state-mandated screenings
  • Develop and implement health plans
  • Interpret health status to parents and school personnel
  • Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel, and community health resources
  • Provide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, and school personnel
  • Recommend and help implement modification of school programs to meet students' health needs
  • Maintain, evaluate, and interpret health data to meet the individual needs of students
  • Provide clinical nursing services as authorized by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act
  • Plan and implement school health management protocols for the child with special health needs
  • Develop guidelines and provide for crisis intervention, acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbances
  • Participate as a member of the school's emergency preparedness/crisis intervention team
  • Promote prevention and control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs
  • Assist in the early surveillance, detection, and reporting of contagious diseases
  • Provide oversight of licensure status and practice of other health service providers of lower licensure in applicable situations
  • Delegate certain nursing functions to appropriate staff
  • Recommend provisions for a school environment conducive to learning
  • Identify and report school environmental concerns and issues
  • Work with administration, faculty, and staff on remediation of issues
  • Provide health education
  • Provide direct health education and health counseling to assist students and families in making health and lifestyle decisions
  • Serve as a resource person to the classroom teacher and supervisor in health instruction
  • Participate in health education, directly and indirectly, by teaching persons to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health
  • Counsel students concerning problems, at-risk behaviors, mental health issues, and substance abuse to facilitate responsible decision-making practices
  • Act as a resource person in promoting health careers
  • Provide health counseling for staff
  • Provide leadership and/or support to staff wellness programs
  • Function as an integral member of the school interdisciplinary team
Requirements:
  • Leadership skills to function as the team leader in the school setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude to operate a variety of computer and audio-visual devices/equipment
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below
Working Conditions:

The position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment. Work requires light physical effort. Tasks may include assisting children and moving equipment.

Terms of Employment:

This is a 10-month position with a salary commensurate with licensure applied to the salary schedule for support employees (Scale 28). All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.

Non-exempt

Evaluation:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.
