POSITION OVERVIEW

This role involves enforcing local animal protection regulations, addressing animal-related complaints, educating the public, and ensuring community health standards by safeguarding both residents and animals. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate animal protection records, transporting animals, performing euthanasia when necessary, assisting with shelter maintenance, and executing other related tasks as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct patrols throughout the community to perform various animal control tasks independently.
  • Safely capture and transport stray animals, livestock, exotic species, and wildlife.
  • Assist in resolving livestock-related traffic issues and remove deceased animals from public areas.
  • Provide medical assessments for injured or malnourished animals and arrange for veterinary care.
  • Respond to requests for animal control assistance from citizens, law enforcement, and other government partners, including after-hours emergencies.
  • Investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect, applying excellent customer service skills in all interactions.
  • Educate the community on responsible pet ownership, available animal protection services, and local ordinances.
  • Conduct inspections of local animal facilities as needed.
  • Manage rabies quarantine cases in compliance with state laws.
  • Engage in ongoing education to maintain required certifications and stay updated on local ordinances and state laws.
  • Perform shelter duties, including euthanizing animals according to established protocols and maintaining accurate records.
  • Assist in the upkeep of shelter facilities, including cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Support animal shelter staff and volunteers, providing training and fostering a welcoming environment.
  • Execute additional duties as assigned.

DECISION-MAKING ABILITIES

The ability to resolve conflicts with dissatisfied citizens and make informed decisions regarding animal handling techniques is essential. This role requires independence, the ability to recognize animal behavior and health issues, and a clear understanding of shelter procedures related to animal release and euthanasia.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in animal handling.
  • Basic Animal Control Officer and Euthanasia Technician certifications must be obtained within the first 120 days of employment.
  • A valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Availability to respond to after-hours emergency calls within one hour.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of animal behavior, identification, and relevant laws.
  • Experience in animal control, shelters, boarding, or veterinary settings.
  • Background in law enforcement or dispatch roles.
  • Ability to maneuver and back up a trailer.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires physical stamina, including the ability to lift over 50 pounds regularly. Employees will be exposed to various weather conditions, potential hazards from aggressive animals, zoonotic diseases, and challenging interactions with the public. Safety equipment will be provided as necessary.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a full-time position requiring availability seven days a week, with a 40-hour workweek and rotational on-call duties for city emergencies.
