About the Artist-in-Residence Program

The School of Art & Design at Alfred University offers a unique opportunity for early-career artists to engage in their creative endeavors. Located in a picturesque valley of the Finger Lakes region, this residency provides a serene environment for artistic research and practice.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color. Artists working primarily with clay are currently unable to apply due to construction restrictions.

Residency Details

Each residency lasts a minimum of two weeks and up to four weeks, taking place from June 23 to July 18. Residents will have access to furnished campus housing, full kitchen facilities, and laundry services.

Grant Support

Residents may receive up to $2,500 in sliding grants to cover travel, meals, or supplies. The grant amounts vary depending on the duration of the residency: $1,500 for two weeks, $2,000 for three weeks, and $2,500 for four weeks.

Studio Facilities

Residents will have access to studio spaces within the Cohen Center for the Arts on Main Street, offering options on both the first (2900 sq ft) and second (3300 sq ft) floors.

Summer Arts Workshops

Artists are invited to participate in fully funded Summer Arts workshops during their residency. These workshops provide an opportunity to engage with local and visiting resident artists while exploring various artistic disciplines.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit a single PDF file containing their CV, portfolio (maximum 20 slides), and letter of interest (maximum two pages). The letter should include details about their project proposal, personal statement, and contact information.

Estimated Salary Range

The estimated salary range for this position is approximately $25,000 to $35,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. This estimate is based on industry standards and location factors.
