Role Summary
The City of Roanoke is in search of a Seasonal Maintenance Worker to join the Street crew within the Transportation division. This position involves performing semi-skilled labor and manual tasks related to street upkeep. Responsibilities include shoveling, raking, and sweeping as part of street maintenance activities. The role requires the operation of various equipment, including dump trucks, light machinery, and hand tools. Responsibilities also encompass making repairs to streets, alleys, road shoulders, medians, curbs, and sidewalks. The worker will operate dump trucks and light equipment for snow removal and assist with emergency tasks as necessary, which may include evening and weekend shifts. Accurate maintenance of log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip documentation is essential. A high school diploma or GED, along with one to three years of relevant experience in street maintenance, driving/operating a dump truck, and performing heavy manual labor, is preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid Virginia driver's license may be required. Additional tasks supporting the division may be assigned as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation (Seasonal):
Conducts routine turf and landscape maintenance tasks within the City of Roanoke's Rights of Way. Operates various mowing equipment, edgers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, and other small power tools. Work is carried out under the supervision of Crew Leaders. A high school diploma or GED is required; one to three months of related experience and/or training in landscape maintenance and heavy manual work is advantageous; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week during the active season.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Loads and unloads materials such as gravel, dirt, timber, and chemicals
- Cuts grass and trims trees, rakes leaves
- Digs shallow trenches and ditches
- Cleans public property and streets by picking up debris
- Performs various street maintenance tasks including cleaning gutters, spreading sand and salt, and snow shoveling
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.
