Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Specialist to join our team at the New York State Department of Transportation. As an Environmental Specialist, you will play a critical role in analyzing and researching environmental issues affecting the State transportation network, gathering data, writing, reviewing, and editing reports, and making recommendations to higher-level management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and research environmental issues affecting the State transportation network, gathering data, and making recommendations to higher-level management.
  • Advise construction, design, highway maintenance, and other program areas on environmental rules and regulations and assist with the development of policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical expertise and assistance in a variety of assignments related to environmental impacts of transportation projects and programs, including the review of proposed Department projects, environmental permits, field studies, and consultation/coordination with regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in environmental processes related to federal, State, and local regulations and requirements.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you must have a Bachelor's degree in a field related to the position being filled, such as environmental science, biology, chemistry, or a related field. You must also have at least one year of professional experience in environmental analysis, including substantial involvement in the preparation and review of environmental impact analyses, requiring knowledge and application of state and federal environmental laws, regulations, methods, procedures, and standards.

Working Conditions

This position may require additional credentials or a background check to verify your identity. Some positions may also require serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
