Job Overview

The Healthcare Unit Coordinator plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive support services within the healthcare unit. The Unit Coordinator is expected to provide patient care within the defined scope of practice, engaging with patients, families, and staff across the organization. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, this role collaborates closely with the healthcare team to ensure optimal patient care for diverse age groups, including adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Adherence to established patient safety protocols and guidelines is essential.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure or Certifications: Current certification as a Nursing Assistant or completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing course for nursing students.
  • Educational Requirements: Proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics at a minimum of a 10th-grade level, demonstrated by a High School Diploma, GED, or high school transcript.
  • Experience: No prior experience is necessary; however, previous roles as a nursing assistant or unit aide are advantageous. Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided.

Core Responsibilities

  • Collects and communicates essential patient physiological data, including vital signs and other relevant observations.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics to assist with patient positioning, mobility, hygiene, and comfort needs.
  • Monitors and documents fluid intake and output accurately.
  • Identifies and reports any changes in physical or mental status to the assigned licensed staff.
  • Organizes patient care and prioritizes tasks according to physician and nursing directives.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures as outlined in the job description, reporting patient responses to the supervising nurse.
  • Conducts regular rounds to patient rooms and responds promptly to call lights.
  • Explains procedures to patients prior to execution, ensuring understanding.
  • Records patient data accurately and submits it to supervisory staff within designated timeframes.
  • Responds to patient inquiries via intercom and directs requests to appropriate personnel.
  • Coordinates dietary requests and communicates changes to the Dietary Department.
  • Participates in emergency procedures in accordance with established policies.
  • Prepares patient rooms for new admissions, ensuring all necessary supplies are available.
  • Welcomes patients and families to the unit, fostering a positive environment.
  • Answers phone calls courteously, ensuring effective communication.
  • Maintains patient charts by organizing documents and replenishing forms as necessary.
  • Recommends equipment and supply purchases to the unit director as needed.
  • Completes requisitions to reflect the unit's needs accurately.
  • Maintains compliance with safety protocols and ensures a clean and safe environment for patients.
  • Participates in staff meetings and completes competency assessments within specified timelines.
