Job Summary

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Wildlife Habitat Manager to join our team. As a key member of our conservation team, you will be responsible for protecting and enhancing wildlife populations and habitats in the North Metro wildlife work area.

Responsibilities
  • Implement habitat management, facility development, and maintenance in the Wildlife Area to enhance wildlife resources and public use.
  • Protect, manage, and enhance wildlife and habitat through habitat evaluation and management, land acquisition, and environmental review.
  • Implement wildlife population management programs, including surveys and census techniques.
  • Promote and establish cooperation and partnerships with other DNR disciplines, government agencies, industry, and citizens groups.
  • Provide information and education to the public and users of the area on opportunities, regulations, policies, and goals of the section of wildlife.
  • Assist with fiscal and administrative activities for the Wildlife Area, including financial and other reporting.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife or equivalent field with wildlife emphasis.
  • Transcripts required.
  • Two years of professional-level wildlife or habitat management experience.
  • Experience with wildlife habitat management in prairie, forest, brushland, or wetland habitats.
  • Technical knowledge of wildlife species identification, habitat relationships, food habits, animal behavior, parasites and disease, life histories, and reproductive potential.
  • Knowledge of census/survey techniques and their limitations.
  • Ability to identify common terrestrial and aquatic plants.
  • Writing and communication skills sufficient to communicate work programs, project proposals, accomplishment reports, survey results, hunting season data, and correspondence.
  • Ability to become National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualified and certified as a non-commercial pesticide applicator within twelve months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in wildlife biology or related field.
  • Knowledge of or experience using prescribed fire for habitat management.
  • Experience with prairie and wetland management practices.
  • Certified in the application of pesticides for invasive species management in Minnesota.
  • Experience with citizen engagement, conflict resolution, and negotiation techniques.
Additional Requirements
  • Unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements and work in the environmental conditions of the position.
