Our surgical oncology department specializes in providing tailored cancer surgical interventions that cater to individual patient needs. We prioritize patient understanding of their procedures and collaborate closely to ensure effective navigation and recovery from cancer surgery. Our team is equipped to perform advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, as well as HIPEC.
Key Responsibilities:
The Physician Assistant (PA-C) - Surgical Oncology is responsible for overseeing clinical practices, engaging in research as needed, providing consultative services, facilitating interdepartmental communication, offering education, demonstrating leadership, and managing patient care throughout the healthcare continuum, from preventive measures to acute care and discharge.
- Conduct pre- and post-operative evaluations of patients and assist in surgical procedures within the Operating Room.
- Enhance and sustain patient health by delivering medical services under the supervision of a Supervising Physician.
- Evaluate patient health through interviews, physical examinations, and thorough reviews of medical histories in both inpatient and outpatient environments.
- Organize and analyze care for patients with complex clinical needs, considering socio-cultural, cognitive, functional, nutritional, and educational factors.
- Act as a patient advocate, ensuring the best interests of patients are met while serving as a liaison among patients, families, Supervising Physicians, and insurance providers; keeping all parties informed of care plan changes and patient status.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team (Attending/residents) to implement and manage patient care plans using evidence-based practices and diagnostic tools to achieve optimal outcomes and minimize hospital stays.
- Document comprehensive histories and physicals for consultations, follow-ups, patient interactions, discharge summaries, and correspondence, ensuring continuity of care.
- Coordinate referrals to various departments as necessary and ensure baseline assessments for both ICU and non-monitored patients to mitigate postoperative complications.
- Perform relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the scope of practice for a physician assistant and approved medical staff privileges.
- Effectively communicate with staff regarding patient information in a clear and respectful manner, adhering to established protocols for telephone orders and critical test results.
- Provide emergency resuscitation as needed, maintaining BLS and ACLS certifications, and promptly identifying patients at risk for cardiac or respiratory issues.
Qualifications:
Educational Background:
- Graduation from a PA program accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation.
- Bachelor's degree.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- Valid California PA license.
- PA certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- DEA License.
- ACLS certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Experience:
- Experience in an acute care hospital setting.
- Minimum of one year as a Physician Assistant (PA-C), preferably in general surgery, reconstructive surgery, or other surgical specialties.
- Experience in oncology and robotic surgery (Da Vinci) is highly preferred.
