POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technician plays a vital role in the Operating Room, executing a range of technical responsibilities to support the surgical team. This includes preparing the patient's skin for surgical procedures in alignment with established protocols, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques, and actively monitoring for any potential breaches in these practices. The Surgical Technician also provides emotional support and comfort to patients prior to surgery, respecting their care and privacy. Responsibilities extend to transporting patients to and from the Operating Room, positioning them appropriately based on the surgical procedure, and managing biological specimens with care. The technician is responsible for preparing the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies according to the specific requirements of each case. This role requires proficiency in serving the age demographic outlined in the department's service scope.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Prepares the Operating Room with the necessary instruments and supplies tailored to the specific surgical or diagnostic procedure.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Assembles required supplies and equipment promptly and according to physician specifications prior to procedures.
  • Anticipates procedural steps and responds accordingly as observed by the care team.
  • Maintains aseptic technique and vigilantly monitors for any potential breaches.
  • Scrubs in the prescribed manner and dons sterile gown and gloves.
  • Assists physicians and nurses with various procedures.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Organizes instruments and equipment systematically, handing them to the surgeon in the correct order and with proper technique.
  • Assists in transferring patients between the operating table and stretcher.
  • Contributes to skin preparation and draping of patients.
  • Supports the physician during surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to departmental protocols for procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist in the circulator role.
  • Exhibits proficiency in preparing specimens for pathology.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performing aseptic skin preparation.
  • Assists with postoperative dressings.
3. Aids in ensuring safe and positive surgical outcomes.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Collaborates with the circulator to ensure accurate surgical counts before and after procedures.
  • Demonstrates accountability in upholding the ethical and legal responsibilities of a surgical team member.

4. Ensures instruments and equipment are maintained in optimal working condition.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

  • Cleans and maintains departmental equipment as per established standards.
  • Assembles, operates, and troubleshoots all job-related equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Tracks equipment usage during daily care delivery and ensures appropriate patient billing.
  • Assembles and cleans instruments and equipment post-surgery.
5. Performs all other assigned duties.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Preferred qualifications include a Licensed Practical Nurse, Nursing Student, Graduate of a School of Nursing, or Graduate of a Surgical Technician School or equivalent experience.


SPECIAL SKILLS, LICENSES, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Certification as a Surgical Technician is preferred.


HIPAA COMPLIANCE:

Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all relevant HIPAA regulations pertinent to the job position, including but not limited to: medical records (both paper and electronic), patient demographics, lab and radiology results, surgical schedules, and patient-related information.


SAFETY COMPLIANCE:

Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all applicable safety practices relevant to the job position, including but not limited to: incident reporting, waste handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), exposure control plans, hand hygiene, patient identification, and monitoring clinical alarms.
