Overview of the Role

The Diagnostic Sonographer is responsible for operating sonographic equipment and conducting diagnostic examinations. This role requires effective communication of examination results to ensure optimal patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct clinical assessments and perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Examinations may include abdominal, vascular, obstetric-gynecological, and interventional procedures.
  • Adhere to established departmental protocols and procedures.
  • Utilize cognitive skills to identify and adapt procedures based on anatomical and pathological findings.
  • Exercise independent judgment to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings during examinations.
  • Analyze sonograms and synthesize information to communicate findings to the Radiologist.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of patients throughout the examination process.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients and the healthcare team, addressing specific needs related to sonographic examinations.
  • Assist in the daily operations of the ultrasound department, including equipment maintenance and supply management.
  • Accurately complete exam tracking and billing on a daily basis.
  • Foster productive working relationships with colleagues and referring providers.
  • Participate in the training of ultrasound students during their clinical rotations.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and assist in teaching ultrasound technology to new staff and medical professionals.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of laboratory accreditation standards.
Qualifications

Education: Completion of a program that meets eligibility requirements for certification or currently holds the necessary certification.

Experience: No additional experience required beyond educational qualifications. Level I candidates must obtain required certifications within 18 months of employment.

Licensure and Certification: ARDMS certification is required within 18 months of hire, along with BLS certification.
