Residential Support Specialist Job Overview

Must be available to work 8 hour shifts every other Saturday and Sunday.

Must be Free and Clear of Communicable Diseases

Position Objective: To deliver a secure, high-quality, professional, and compassionate service. You will be tasked with fostering the utmost level of independence and improving the quality of life for all individuals residing in Abilities, Inc. programs. This is all aimed at ensuring the best welfare, safety, and security for you, the community, and the clients we serve.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. As a member of Abilities, Inc., you may be required to rotate among various facilities and program supervisors. Flexibility with these changes is expected as you are an employee of Abilities, Inc. and are not assigned to any specific home.
  2. Oversee residents in accordance with the specifications outlined in their Individual Service Plans (ISP), Behavioral Support Plan (BSP), and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP). Employees must also be familiar with and review Elopement Plans/Protocols, Seizure Protocols, Diabetic Protocols, and any other relevant plans pertaining to the residents under their supervision.
  3. Serve as a positive role model. Utilize positive reinforcement, avoid degrading remarks, and refrain from actions that would contradict the best interests of the residents of Abilities, Inc.
  4. Maintain a clean facility. Ensure that the environment is homelike and encourage independence among residents so they can learn the skills necessary to keep a tidy home. It is your responsibility to ensure that residents have a clean and hazard-free living space, and to assist and motivate residents to maintain their personal areas.
  5. Exhibit a professional demeanor at all times towards residents, their guests/family members, guardians, care managers, supervisors, and fellow employees of Abilities, Inc. Show respect and consistency with program structure.
  6. Complete all tasks assigned by supervisors.
  7. Prepare meals in accordance with the posted menu in the facility, ensuring sanitary practices are followed. Prepare special diets as directed by the resident's physician. Grocery shopping and menu planning may be required. Encourage resident involvement in menu planning and meal preparation.
  8. Provide Personal Care Services as specified in the residents' Individual Service Plan (ISP). This may involve lifting and transferring residents, requiring the use of gait belts, adaptive equipment, and the ability to lift up to 100 pounds. Please adhere to Abilities, Inc. Limited Lift Policy.
  9. Plan and engage in community and in-facility activities. An activity calendar will be available in the facility at all times.
  10. Familiarize yourself with Evacuation Procedures, Grievance Procedures, and Program Statements, which are provided in the facility on a designated wall, along with all Policies and Procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  11. Attend all scheduled shifts and staff meetings. You will be expected to comply with Abilities, Inc. Attendance policy and take responsibility for your shifts.
  12. Communicate comprehensive and accurate reports through verbal and written skills. You will be required to use electronic charting and must possess basic computer skills.
  13. Provide safe transportation for residents as delegated by your direct supervisor to work, community activities, personal care shopping/grocery shopping, Adult Day Care services, and medical appointments.
  14. Administer/monitor medications according to orders prescribed by the resident's physician. Gain knowledge of potential side effects and interactions of the medications. This can be assessed through Extended Care Professional (ECP) and Abilities, Inc. electronic charting for all medication administration and resident documentation. You will also be responsible for shift-to-shift Schedule 2 medication counts, as an approved medication passer/monitor.
  15. Acquaint yourself with the State Requirements outlined in DHS 88 and DHS 83. Copies will be provided at the facility for your review.
  16. Attend all training mandated by Abilities, Inc. Administration, including:

This includes your required 15 hours of Continuing Education (CEU Training) after your annual hire date. Failure to complete any training within the required timeline may result in suspension and/or termination of employment.

  1. Report any maintenance concerns to your program supervisor immediately, and you will be asked to fill out a maintenance request form.
  2. You will be required to report any changes in condition immediately to your program supervisor and complete the appropriate documentation.
  3. You will be responsible for logging yourself in and out when reporting to and leaving work. You will be held accountable for reviewing your hours and reporting any discrepancies to your direct supervisor immediately upon realizing the error.
  4. You will be responsible for reporting any injury that occurs in the workplace immediately to your direct supervisor and completing the appropriate paperwork.
  5. You will be required to have an initial TB (Tuberculosis) skin test placed and read after 72 hours, prior to reporting for work. A second TB (Tuberculosis) skin test will be completed within 2 weeks of your initial test.
