Job Summary

This position performs laboratory testing in the clinical laboratory, responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand all principle(s) involved in assigned procedures and apply this knowledge to the clinical situation or outcomes in clinical diagnosis management of the patient.
  • Determine if specimen integrity issues, patient medication(s), other interfering substances that could affect patient testing results.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and perform procedures to ensure high quality, accurate, and cost-effective results in all areas of the laboratory.
  • Ensure accuracy of testing per manufacturer's guidelines and all applicable regulations.
  • Interface with hot lines and service personnel to oversee proper functionality and repair of instruments.
  • Report results within time limits established for procedures, report results for STAT, critical values, and other categories as defined by laboratory policy.
  • Record patient data and other information quickly and accurately in the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) to ensure appropriate turnaround time and effective retrieval of patient testing results.
  • Collect and/or process specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures for timely and accurate testing.
  • Perform and document quality control as specified for each procedure meeting established internal and regulatory guidelines, accurately analyze quality control results obtained before accepting and reporting patient testing results.
  • Follow policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established acceptable levels. Notify Supervisor or designee of discrepant quality control results.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance activities to meet the Laboratory Quality Plan. Follow policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within established acceptable levels. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results. Initiate, investigate, and implement all necessary corrective action(s). Document follow-up in the electronic software to resolve variances in procedures and outcome(s). Must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or designee.
  • Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimens as part of the Laboratory Quality Plan.
  • Ensure a safe environment by demonstrating knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
  • Participate in the Laboratory Safety team to assist in Safety Audits, training, and review of Laboratory Safety Policies.
  • Enhance professional growth and development of self, department staff, other hospital personnel, community, and students by participation in continuing education, in-service training, and the School of Medical Technology lectures and bench training.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate Degree in a Biological Science with completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology program along with certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency.
  • Baccalaureate Degree in a Biological Science with completion of a NAACLS approved Medical Technology program along with ASCP Certification.
  • CLIA '88 Equivalent (HEW/HHS Certification).
  • Registry Eligible for a Section Certification - must have a Baccalaureate Degree with a minimum of five years of technical experience in ONE of the Clinical Areas of the Laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 6-12 months of clinical internship as part of an approved MLS Training Program.
