About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Manager to join our team at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in the Innovation Institute. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Chief Innovation Officer to manage the hospital's intellectual property (IP) portfolio, including relationships with external patent firms, patent filings, and responses to patent office actions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and Maintain Relationships with researchers and clinical, operational staff to foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Educate and Inform HSS faculty and staff about intellectual property and technology transfer best practices.
  • Review and Assess new discoveries and innovations for potential commercial value, patentability, marketability, and technical understanding.
  • Advise and Assist inventors in navigating the patent process, developing IP protection strategies, and making decisions on patent prosecution and copyright protection.
  • Manage IP Portfolio including relationships with external patent firms, patent filings, responses to patent office actions, patent annuities, and milestones.
  • Prepare Marketing Materials and non-confidential summaries for commercialization discussions.
  • Identify and Engage companies and individuals in commercialization discussions related to HSS IP.
  • Coordinate Digital Communications with HSS Marketing and Innovation leadership.
  • Represent HSS at local, regional, and national partnering and business development events.
  • Participate in Negotiations of licenses and other contracts with existing companies, startups, and other partners.
  • Ensure Compliance with Bayh-Dole Act and reporting through US Government's iEdison system.
  • Modernize Tech Transfer Technology Stack (e.g., patent and contract management solutions).
  • Participate in Professional Development and training opportunities.
  • Represent HSS in Seminars and Educational Events at HSS and in the NYC region.
Qualifications
  • Science-based Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years of Academic Technology Transfer Experience in life science/biopharma technologies.
  • Strong Communication, Analytical, and Interpersonal Skills.
  • Ability to Manage a Large and Diverse Range of Tasks and Technology Types.
  • Ability to Foster and Maintain Cooperative Working Relationships with faculty, staff, and other institutional stakeholders.
  • Ability to Understand and Apply Broad-based Knowledge of the hospital's innovation and research enterprise to support commercialization efforts and operations.
  • Comfortable Working in a Fast-paced Environment and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
