About the Job

The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) plays a vital role in the Health Administration team within the Central Iowa VA Healthcare System. As an MSA, you will be responsible for performing duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information while interfacing with personal computer applications and various Vista applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Scheduling, canceling, and re-scheduling patients' appointments and/or consults
  • Entering no-show information and monitoring the electronic wait list
  • Preparing for clinic visits and monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility
  • Ensuring encounter forms are completed to obtain appropriate workload credit
  • Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information
  • Processing emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals
  • Performing basic eligibility, co-pays, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage
  • Reporting backlogs, difficulties in meeting deadlines, uncooperative physicians, or difficulty in securing information from clinicians or the record
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of information obtained to carry out required duties
  • Communicating with physicians, case managers, and other allied health professional staff using sound interpersonal skills
  • Making decisions based on guidelines, precedents, and regulations and performing duties in such a manner that only minimal supervision is required
Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm

Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English
  • You may be required to serve a probationary period
  • Subject to background/security investigation
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP)
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP)
