Position Objective/Description:

As a Tailman, you will perform a variety of manual construction tasks involving roads, highways, and heavy construction projects under the direction of a crew foreman.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform manual labor tasks in heavy/highway construction projects, including loading, unloading, and distributing materials, machinery, or tools.
  • Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, and erect scaffolding.
  • Operate power tools, such as saws, hammers, and rakes, to level earth or asphalt to grade specifications.
  • Position or dismantle forms for pouring concrete.
  • Tend pumps, compressors, or generators.
  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
  • Assist pipe layer in the installation of water main and sewer.
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances as part of site preparation.
  • Operate a variety of power and hand tools, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, mechanical hoists, surveying, measuring, and other equipment.
  • Maintain a clean work area by disposing of trash and debris properly.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Promote and adhere to the company's safety program.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • 2 years recent experience working as Tailman (road construction)
  • Experience with underground construction, including laying water, sewer, and storm pipe
  • One (1) year experience working as general laborer, or equivalent experience
  • Active Driver's license

Work Environment:

Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Handles various toxic products, such as epoxies, grouts, sealers, paints, and cleaners, with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
