Job Summary
The Patient Care Assistant plays a vital role in delivering compassionate care to patients under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse. This position is responsible for ensuring a hygienic and secure environment for patients while executing job duties safely. The role includes clerical support tasks and responsibilities aligned with the Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II classification as per state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides hands-on patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Facilitates communication among patients, families, healthcare providers, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Informs physicians regarding admissions, consultations, and other relevant updates as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Handles computer data entry tasks, including order processing, procedure cancellations, and billing as necessary.
- Reviews patient census, types, and accommodation codes, ensuring updates are made as required.
- Organizes and files results, reports, and related documentation in patient records.
- Coordinates scheduled surgeries, procedures, tests, and necessary communications as mandated by the unit or department.
- Maintains logs and reports pertinent to patient care and prepares necessary documentation for management and nursing staff.
- Communicates new orders and patient requests to the responsible nurse or healthcare team member, ensuring follow-up for order verification.
- Utilizes patient labels to accurately identify all related documentation, requisitions, and identification tags with the correct patient information.
- Conducts a verbal or written handoff of essential information at the end of each shift with the incoming unit secretary, healthcare technician, nurse aide, and charge nurse.
- Assists in the transfer of patients, equipment, supplies, or specimens as needed.
Physical Requirements
This role necessitates regular walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, and pulling. The ability to lift and support weights of up to 35 pounds is essential for handling patients, medical equipment, and supplies. Proficiency in basic English communication is required, along with intact senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch. Manual dexterity is also necessary.
Education, Training, and Experience
A high school diploma or GED is mandatory. Candidates must have completed an accredited Nurse Aide Training Program or be a nursing student fulfilling the listing criteria of the relevant Nurse Aide Registry. Current registration as a Nurse Aide I is required, with the possibility of being a Nurse Aide II.
A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in Acute Care settings is preferred.
Patient Population Served
The individual must demonstrate an understanding of the principles of growth and development and possess the skills and competencies appropriate to the ages, cultures, developmental stages, and specific needs of the patient population served.
Protected Health Information
- Access to protected health information (PHI) will be limited to what is necessary to perform job duties.
- Information will be shared strictly on a need-to-know basis for work-related purposes.
- Access to verbal, written, and electronic PHI is determined by job level and responsibilities within the organization, controlled through user ID and password.
Machines, Tools, and Equipment
The role involves the use of various clinical equipment, including blood pressure monitors, stethoscopes, thermometers, personal protective equipment, wheelchairs, stretchers, and utility carts, along with office equipment such as computers, printers, fax machines, telephones, copiers, intercoms, and materials transport systems.
