Project Overview:

Tulane's School of Science and Engineering is embarking on a multi-year project to improve outcomes for prostate and colorectal cancer surgical patients. The project aims to rapidly scan tumor excisions with high resolution and precision, and then utilize advanced machine-learning techniques to detect residual tumor cells on the surface. The project will result in the creation of a device to scan and present results to a surgeon while still in the operating room.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new mechanical systems for biological sample handling
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure project success
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, and clinicians to integrate mechanical systems with machine vision and machine-learning techniques
  • Develop and implement advanced mechanical systems for high-speed scanning and precision
  • Contribute to the development of a device to scan and present results to a surgeon in the operating room

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a similar field
  • 5 years of applicable mechanical engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant discipline or a Master's Degree in a relevant discipline
  • 6 years of applicable mechanical engineering experience
  • Programming experience in Python, C++, or C#
  • Experience in mechanical or industrial automation
  • Machine vision experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
