Overview:


The Point of Care Testing Specialist is accountable for ensuring the precision and dependability of all laboratory assessments conducted by Point of Care personnel (including nurses, perfusionists, emergency department physicians, clinics, and respiratory therapists) within the healthcare system.


Key Responsibilities:


The Specialist aids in the formulation of essential policies, procedures, and training materials for Point of Care testing staff.

They organize and coordinate Point of Care activities across hospitals as required.


The Specialist takes charge of implementing laboratory policies and procedures while supervising Quality Control and Proficiency Testing to guarantee adherence to regulatory standards.

They maintain metrics for Point of Care testing.

Daily, weekly, or monthly nursing reports are generated and discussed with supervisors or the Laboratory Director.

The Specialist is responsible for validating equipment, ensuring correlation, linearity, and precision.

They assist in regulatory preparations, such as CAP, CLIA, and TJC compliance, and participate in hospital meetings related to regulatory adherence.

The Specialist stays updated on changes in Point of Care testing and regulations, serving as a subject matter expert for the Medical Director.

They support the investigation, review, oversight, and implementation of new Point of Care assays.


Regular visits to all entity units are conducted to engage with nurse managers and directors, ensuring quality patient care and fostering strong relationships with hospital staff and physicians.

Exceptional customer service skills are essential for this role.

Collaboration with laboratory management and staff is crucial to support Point of Care testing around the clock.

The Specialist addresses all Point of Care issues.

They maintain an inventory list of Point of Care testing equipment.

They also manage the Point of Care test list by site and location.

The incumbent actively supports and adheres to all company, hospital, and departmental policies and procedures.


Ensures that all Point of Care testing is performed in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, as well as HCFA, CLIA'88, TJC, and Department of Health State guidelines.


Responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive Point of Care policy and procedure manual that meets accreditation and licensing standards.

They resolve technical issues related to equipment and reagents per established protocols.

Quality Assurance programs are administered, findings evaluated and reported, and corrective actions maintained.

They ensure remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

Hospital policies are enforced, and Point of Care testing access is revoked when violations occur.

Training and orientation programs for Point of Care testing staff are developed.


They oversee the central processing station for Point of Care laboratory testing (including computer hardware/software) to ensure timely reporting of tests, Quality Control, billing, and regulatory compliance.

Responsible for the RALs interface of Point of Care analyzers.

Attendance at hospital, department, and laboratory management meetings and committees is required.

They inform the Supervisor of any issues affecting test procedure performance and share complaints regarding test result validity and turnaround times.

They oversee equipment and supply inventories to ensure adequate resources for uninterrupted operations.

Records of Quality Control and Proficiency testing are maintained as required by regulatory agencies.

Assistance with in-house and off-site inspections and educational programs is provided as necessary.

Adherence to all established laboratory safety protocols is mandatory.

Use of personal protective equipment, including latex gloves, and adherence to engineering and work practice controls as directed by management is required.

The Specialist actively supports and complies with laboratory policies and procedures.

They perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Medical Director or Regional Director of Laboratory Services.

Qualifications:

Required Work Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a core laboratory setting.

Preferred Work Experience:
Two to three years of experience in Point of Care testing is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Physical activities include frequent walking, sitting, bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and squatting. The ability to lift up to 30 lbs. to a height of 5 feet and carry moderately light loads for a distance of 50 feet is required. Color vision is necessary for accuracy in work. The work environment is associated with a clinical laboratory setting, which may involve exposure to toxic and/or hazardous chemicals and unpleasant odors.

Knowledge:
Basic theoretical and operational knowledge of laboratory technologies and Point of Care testing is required.

Working knowledge of Google Workspace programs (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar) and Point of Care software is essential.

Familiarity with organizational and departmental policies and procedures is necessary.

Basic understanding of HIS and LIS computer operations and interfaces is required.

Skills:
Effective communication skills are necessary to manage client concerns and handle telephone inquiries.

EDUCATION
A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science is highly preferred.

A Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science with at least 2 years of laboratory experience is required.
