Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at the Sussex State Prison Complex. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, you will provide evidence-based nursing care to patients, utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide flexible staffing arrangement for Licensed Practical Nurses seeking additional hours, no more than an average of 29 hours per week.
  • Screen for sick call, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
  • Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interact with other departments as needed.
  • Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Work hours, days, and locations as assigned, and be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license.
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers' orders in applying treatments.
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment.
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care.
What We Offer

This wage position offers no state benefits. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year.
