The mission of the Department of Law is to deliver exceptional legal representation to the citizens of Georgia, ensuring that state agencies, officers, and employees receive the highest quality legal support while fulfilling the constitutional and statutory duties of the Attorney General. The Department is structured into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. This position will specifically contribute to the Real Property, Construction, Transportation, and Authorities section within our Commercial Transactions Division.

The Assistant Attorney General acts as the legal representative and advisor for state agencies, departments, authorities, and the Governor. Responsibilities may vary based on the specific division. Attorneys in specialized units may engage in prosecuting fraud and corruption cases involving state departments and agencies, including identity fraud, residential mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and fraud and abuse within the Georgia Medicaid program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer legal guidance to state entities on issues related to government and construction law impacting real estate transactions.
  • Negotiate and draft intricate agreements for the acquisition, sale, construction, development, and management of state properties and facilities.
  • Provide counsel on best practices regarding federal contract administration.
  • Supervise a network of Special Assistant Attorneys General involved in public works projects, including inverse condemnation and condemnation actions.
  • Litigate cases, including:
    • Participating in hearings and representing cases in state and federal courts;
    • Conducting research and preparing pleadings, motions, and briefs;
    • Attending depositions, interviewing witnesses, and engaging expert witnesses;
    • Participating in settlement negotiations;
    • Drafting pleadings and responses to discovery requests.
  • Provide legal advice and representation to clients/agencies; draft advisory memoranda.
  • Conduct research on relevant legal issues; stay updated on recent legal developments.
  • Draft formal opinions in response to legal inquiries.
  • Address inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
  • Attend meetings with clients, boards, departments, and divisions as necessary.
  • Participate in continuing legal education seminars as required; deliver presentations when applicable.
  • Travel as necessary for the role.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited law school and membership in the Georgia Bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience advising government, public, and/or non-profit organizations;
  • Experience managing matters related to both horizontal and vertical construction of state facilities.
