Job Title: Early Childhood Teacher

Job Summary:

We are seeking a qualified Early Childhood Teacher to join our team at Memorial Health University Medical Center. As an Early Childhood Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a safe and nurturing environment for children to encourage their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.

Responsibilities:

  • Interaction between staff and children:
    • Interact frequently, affectionately, and respectfully with children, using positive language and body language.
    • Respect and observe children's interests, intervening when necessary to maintain safety.
    • Enhance children's play with language, toys, and activities, encouraging and modeling appropriate behaviors and expectations.
    • Communicate directly with each child at their level, engaging and communicating constructively during activities and routines.
    • Maintain availability and responsiveness to children's needs, questions, and requests, acknowledging feelings with sensitivity and demonstrating appropriate expression of emotions.
    • Practice positive discipline techniques in guiding children's behavior, according to MMC's guidelines.
    • Maintain attentiveness, flexibility, and support with children and others during transitions among classrooms.
  • Curriculum:
    • Implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the Creative Curriculum, reflecting observations and assessments of individual children.
    • Plan a daily schedule that balances activities using the Creative Curriculum lesson plan.
    • Design an environment that responds to children's individual development, physical, and emotional needs and interests, using the Creative Curriculum.
    • Foster positive self-concepts by supporting individuality, independence, and choices, encouraging creative expression, and respecting diversity.
    • Create documentation of children's accomplishments through anecdotal notes, observations, and portfolios.
  • Faculty/Parent Interactions:
    • Acknowledge parents and all classroom visitors, inviting input from parents regarding their child's development and care.
    • Respond to parents' comments and concerns with sensitivity, interest, and respect, maintaining confidentiality.
    • Establish and maintain a Primary Caregiving relationship with individual children and their families, assisting in planning and attending center/classroom events and meetings.
    • Communicate verbally and in writing with parents regarding the development and specific activities of the children in their primary care, sharing resources through discussions, articles, and parent boards.
  • Physical Environment, Health, Safety, and Nutrition:
    • Maintain and follow all safety and health rules of the center, supervising children at all times, and demonstrating awareness of the entire group while working with a small group or individuals.
    • Encourage children to utilize appropriate health, safety, and nutritional practices, knowing the number of children in the assigned group and maintaining ratios at all times.
    • Maintain accurate attendance records throughout the day, completing appropriate paperwork (i.e., accidents, medication, etc.).
    • Keep the environment and equipment safe, clean, and attractive, encouraging respect for classroom materials, and alerting others when supplies are needed.
  • Professionalism:
    • Maintain confidentiality about issues concerning faculty members, children, and families or MMC leadership and operations, supporting the organizational mission, philosophies, values, goals, and policies.
    • Ensure continuity of care for children by reporting to work on time and maintaining consistent attendance, arranging and communicating leave requests in advance.
    • Respect and adhere to staffing schedules, which may be adjusted as program needs change, and may include working in another classroom.
    • Attend faculty meetings, training sessions, and other center events, continuing professional growth by attending courses, asking for feedback, and reading professional literature.
    • Receive constructive criticism with a willingness to improve, providing feedback in a respectful manner.
  • Teamwork:
    • Establish and maintain cooperation and respect with co-workers, assuming a fair share of work and seeking ways to be helpful, assuming other responsibilities as needed (kitchen, pets, etc.).
    • Participate in teaching team through communication, collaboration, and curriculum planning, communicating and working to resolve conflicts quickly and avoid gossip.
    • Exercise care in expressing views regarding the personal attributes or professional conduct of co-workers, statements based on first-hand knowledge and relevant to the interests of children and programs.

Requirements:

  • Age Requirement: The IL Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) requires teachers to be a minimum of 19 years of age.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalency certificate (GED) required. Associates degree in Early Childhood or Child Development is strongly desired. Bachelors degree in Early Childhood or related field is strongly preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registry: Illinois Gateways to Opportunity Registry member within the first 5 days of employment. Provide 3 letters of reference per DCFS requirements. Hold or be able to obtain, within 90 days, First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Experience: DCFS requires a minimum of one (1) year of experience in child care, early childhood, or child development.
  • Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Maintain 20 hrs of in-service hours each fiscal year, 5 hours must be from a Gateway Registry-approved training. Demonstrates excellent communication skills, initiative in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner. Demonstrates knowledge of ages and stages of development. Demonstrate flexibility and openness to new ideas in child care practices. Understands the general areas of physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development for this age group.
