General Overview:

The Department of Public Safety and Police at James Madison University is inviting applications for a full-time Campus Security Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities include:

  • Conducting patrols of university premises, including buildings, storage areas, and grounds, either on foot or in a vehicle to enforce laws and regulations.
  • Preventing criminal activities, investigating disturbances, and safeguarding life and property.
  • Managing crowds, traffic, parking, and pedestrian movements; issuing citations to traffic violators; reporting and investigating traffic incidents.
  • Responding to emergencies and requests for assistance; providing aid; investigating suspicious activities or unusual occurrences.
  • Preparing and maintaining various records and reports; conducting initial investigations; securing evidence and apprehending suspects.
  • Serving legal documents as necessary; testifying in court and at administrative hearings; escorting students, staff, visitors, and dignitaries.
  • Providing information and directions to employees, clients, and visitors; identifying potential hazards that may threaten public safety.
  • Utilizing various communication and police equipment, including cameras, fingerprint devices, mobile data terminals, and in-car video systems.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Virginia DCJS police certification and NCIC/VICIN B level.
  • Proven knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Proficient skills in operating police equipment relevant to the role and in the use of authorized weapons.
  • Ability to interpret laws, rules, and regulations; conduct investigations; and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
  • Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and required overtime.

Conditions of Employment:

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check. New hires must complete an I-9 form and provide documentation of their identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
